Potential stops in southeastern France, southern Germany

Thanks everyone for the great insights about the first part of our upcoming October tour. We have made our plans for Bath and the Cotswolds based upon advice from this forum (Mad Max tour of Stonehenge and Cotswolds). Current plans include a train up to Edinburgh, flight over to Copenhagen, night train to Berlin, then stops in Prague, Vienna, Lake Bled, Ljubjlana, and Salzburg.

We'd like to continue on to the east with our Global Eurail pass with final destinations being Normandy Beach(s), Versailles and a return flight to NY from Paris.

Last year we visited Colmar, FR and Bacharach, GER and Innsbruck, AUS ... so as we head east through that part of Europe any fresh suggestions would be much appreciated. I would guess we'll have 4-5 nights for that leg of the journey and we might lean towards smaller cities/towns at that point after our prior stops.

Thanks much.

Next logical stop after Salzburg would be in Munich, perhaps for 2 nights. I know it's not small, but you are right there. Then in to Switzerland for 2 nights in Luzern and a night in either Bern or Lausanne. TGV to Paris.

It's wise to book a few weeks ahead for a TGV from Germany or Switzerland to Paris (before you connect to Normandy), since the number of places for pass holders is limited on these trains. Those departing directly from Swiss cities are also more expensive to reserve ($35-70 per person) vs. more normal TGV seat reservation prices departing Germany or Strasbourg. Rail Europe would have to ship these to you before you leave home. Another handy location to handle that booking would be at the Euraide office (or other ticket window) in the Reisezentrum at Berlin Hbf station. (A few slower, unreserved connections also exist, such as a 5-hour evening trip from Mulhouse to Paris with connection at Belfort.)
