I'm traveling to France on Oct 20 on Air France. I understand that Air France pilots are highly likely to go on strike Oct 17-21. Does Air France usually reroute its passengers? How far in advance do they let passengers know?

It would be very unusual for an AF strike to affect international flights. Disruptions to flights are usually confined to domestic flights.
