My husband and I will be on the RS South France tour ending in mid October. We will have 6 days before flying home from Nice. Any recommendations about what to see and do following the tour? We are undecided about staying in Nice or dividing our time between two cities. We prefer to not rent a car. Thanks for any advice.
I would stay in Nice the remainder of the trip. Transportation options are best from Nice than elsewhere on the riviera. I spent six days in Nice and you will be fine.
Nice alone deserves two nights. If you can stay in Vieux Nice do so. Most likely you will stroll along the Promenade des Anglais and don’t miss the Chagall Museum.
Good day trips from Nice are Villefranche-sur-Mer, the Cap Ferrat peninsula, Eze’le’Village, Monaco, Antibes, St-Paul-de-Vence and Vence. Cap Ferrat, St-Paul-de-Vence and Vence are best by bus but St-Paul-de-Vence and Vence both require a transfer. The other places mentioned are doable by direct train: https://www.sncf-connect.com/en-en/.
Thanks MaryPat.
We would like to take a scenic train into the Alps. I have seen two options: Train des Pignes or train des Merveilla.
Has anyone done either of these? Any advice on which is more scenic?
I would not stay in Nice, especially for that long. For us there isn't a lot on offer on the Riviera. We prefer places with more historical sites etc... I've never been but I've heard Lyon and surrounds are wonderful.
On our third trip to Nice a few years ago we stayed two weeks. Nice and the surrounding areas offer so many wonderful options. Cap Ferat is a favorite, as is Antibes.
Nice is good for more time than the tour provides, connects to other Riviera sights by train and/or bus, and you'll end up there anyway to fly home. However, if you want more time in Provence than the tour provides, you could spend a few nights in Aix or Avignon. Avignon has better train and bus connections to other parts of the area, Aix might be a more laid-back choice with possible day tours.
Train des Pignes operates between Nice and Provence not the Alps. However, Train des Merveilla does travel through a green mountainous area of France for a long time, but after a while, it was boring. It was pretty, but not a blockbuster sight. The scenery never changed.
