Necessary to book ahead in July?
OK just to do entrance ticket or does a guided tour enhance greatly! (There are 5 of us so these get pricey!)
Thanks in advance -

I'm nearly certain there's an audioguide available. I almost always opt for one of those. The additional expense isn't great, and it could possibly be reduced (depending on the hardware being used) if you had an earbud/headphone splitter so two people could share one device. As of May 2017 there was no issue with getting a walk-up ticket, but I don't know what's going on now. Have you checked the website to be sure there's not a requirement to prepurchase tickets? Some sights did have such a requirement, especially for weekend visits earlier during the pandemic.
The Palais des Papes is mostly empty, so some form of guidance will probably make it easier to appreciate.
There is a very good audio/video guide available. You're given a tablet and it shows you how each room would have looked back in the day. It's very interactive and as you turn, the view turns. It helps bring the Palace to life, because without it, it is an empty shell.
Not to be a downer, but imho the Papal Palace has to be one of the biggest letdowns of sightseeing. There’s just nothing in there, total bummer. The outside is a sight to behold, and I would use the entrance fee to post up and enjoy a drink at the cafes opposite the Palace.
If you’re set on seeing it, a guide might be what’s needed to bring the place to life.
This is a skippable sight as a previous poster says. See it from the outside.
Sometimes there are good temporary exhibitions inside though, so worth checking!
I saw a wonderful exhibition of African sculpture there in 2017. I don't like the over-the-top furnishings you often encounter in palaces, so I was very happy with the Palais des Papes. It would probably be a good idea, though, for potential visitors to Google for photos. There's never enough time to see all the worthwhile sights during a trip, so I'm always happy to scratch something from my list if I decide it won't be very interesting to me.
