Please suggest day trips in Provence

Hello everyone...we have an apartment for eight full days in May in Lourmarin. We will have a car and GPS. Can you please suggest day trips for us. We probably would not want to get more than 1 1/2 hours from Lourmarin. We like beautiful places, historic sites, markets, etc. We don't mind making multiple stops during a day. Thank you so much.

There are a number of interesting villages well within that time frame just to the northeast: Bonnieux, Lacoste, Menerbes, Goult, Roussillon, and Gordes,

Aix-en-Provence, Nimes, Avignon, Orange...all have what you are looking for. Market days may vary.

I stayed in Roussillon when I was in Provence. I bought a good detailed map of Provence - GPS is good when you're driving but you need a really good map for planning the daily road trips. I loved looking at the map and picking an area, then googling the towns to see which ones interested me and just heading out for the day. Loved the markets so always planned to visit a town with a market that day. Of course I had gathered a list of possible places from this forum. Some of my favorite places (in no particular order) were: Isle sur la Sorgue, Gargas, Bonnieux, Joucas, Vaison la Romaine, Gordes, and of course Roussillon - oh so many great places.

Here is a website that lists the weekly market days for the towns in Provence: http://www.avignon-et-provence.com/market-provence/market-provence.htm#.Vs3Kq_krLIU .

Lucky you! May will be gorgeous with blooming red poppies. Arles and San Remy (both have wonderful Market Days) will give you more than a day of sights. Also Carrieres de Lumieres, right outside of Le Baux is a not to be missed experience.

I encourage you to look at Provence Byways: http://www.provencebyways.com/. Their eponymous book was recommended to me in 2014 and it has excellent suggestions. It might be even better for you because the writers were based in Lourmarin and many of their driving routes flow from there.

Be sure to get a market schedule... they are so much fine. The Sunday market (I believe) in Isle sur la Sourge(sp) is the antiques market and amazing. Get there early. Also the Wed. market in St. Remy (my favorite town) is lots of fun... food, linens, clothing, etc. I think the Saturday market is just food. All the towns that are listed are amazing and do try to make it to the Lumieres show... unforgettable.

Please get a good detailed regional map of the area. It will help with planning and seeve as backup for your GPS. A good giudebook will also be helpful. Good luck.
