Please review my 12 days France itenary and give feedback.

This itinerary is heavily inspired by Rick's 3 weeks France itinerary, tailored to fit in 12 days. Please review and give me your feedback.

We'll be arriving to Paris from another EU town (likely Vienna), so in terms of jetlag, we should be fine.

Day 1: Fly into Paris, pick up rental car, and visit Giverny en route to Bayeux
Sleep in: Bayeux

Day 2: Spend day touring D-Day sights: Arromanches, American Cemetery, and Pointe du Hoc — and Utah Beach Landing Museum.
In late afternoon, drive to Mont St-Michel and visit its abbey
(I am worried this is too much in one day - let me know).
Sleep in: Mont St-Michel

Day 3: Head for Loire. Tour Chambord, then settle in Amboise and take self-guided town walk
Sleep in: Amboise

Day 4: Day trip to Chenonceau and Cheverny or Chaumont
Sleep in: Amboise

Day 5: Return the rental car (need to look into this). Train to Paris, Visit Eiffel tower
Sleep in: Paris

Day 6: Louvre Museum, (Optional) Orsay Museum, Notre-dame Church
Sleep in: Paris

Day 7: Montmartre, Sacre Coeur, Arc de Triomphe, Champs-Elysees
Sleep in: Paris

Day 8: Palace of Versailles, Gardens, Latin Quarter
Sleep in: Paris

Day 9: Day trip to Colmar (please let me know if this is possible) Or more time in Paris
Sleep in: Paris

Day 10: Train to Nice
Sleep in: Nice

Day 11: Villefranche-sur-Mer OR Eze OR Monaco
Sleep in: Nice

Day 12: All day in Nice
Sleep in: Nice

If you're arriving from an overnight flight from the US, it's generally ill-advised to drive on your arrival day.

Here are my thoughts:

Day 2: You may not get to MSM in time to visit the abbey this afternoon as your day is pretty full. If you are staying on the Mount, you have to park in the parking area and take the shuttle (or walk) to the front entrance. I'd say that takes at least 30 minutes from parking and paying, maybe making a comfort stop and then you may have to wait a few minutes for a shuttle. Depending on when you are visiting, they stop accepting visitors to the abbey an hour before closing.

Day 3: You may wind up doing the Abbey this AM.

Day 4: This looks fine.

Day 5: This looks fine.

Day 6: This looks like a lot. You'd need reservations for the Louvre and Orsay. Those museums are big and a lot to absorb. Notre Dame could be worked in maybe before the Louvre. Maybe do the Champs-Elysees and the Arc de Triomphe today. I'm not a big one for walking the Champs-Elysees. It's all chain stores and you can get a good look from the end of the Tuileries between the Orangerie and Jeu de Paume. I'd catch the #1 Metro line at the Place de la Concorde and take it to the Arc de T.

Day 7: Depending on what day of the week this is, I'd start with the Orsay (closed Mondays). Then I'd head up to Montmartre.

Day 8: For me, Versailles takes the whole day. I don't think you can see the Latin quarter unless you go somewhere there for dinner. Your trip, your choices, though.

Day 9: It's possible to do a day trip to Colmar. I liked it a lot but spent 3 nights (2 full days) there. You can take a fast train for a 2-hour + journey. However, there is a LOT to see in Paris so if you decided to stay in town you have lots of choices. You could do one of the walks from Paris Walks, maybe today they have one of the Latin Quarter.

When are you traveling?

Hi Pam, thanks for your feedback, it is super useful! I'll be in France in the last week on June.

I agree with Pam. Day 2 is too much. The DDay sights are not 5 minutes apart and can take most of the day. You could drive late in the day to MSM (1 1/2 hrs) , but you probably won't get to see the Abbey that day. You could spend an hour or two touring there in the a.m. (start early), then head to the Loire. It will take you about 4 hours for the drive to Chambord, not counting any stops along the way. It closes at 6 p.m. in the summer, so I would try to be there by 4 p.m. Your plan is doable, just shift the Abbey tour to the next morning, and plan on getting to Amboise later than you figured.
Day 4 and 5 look good. Day 6....I would be museumed out with both the Louvre and Orsay on the same day. How about Louvre, Notre Dame and Ste. Chappelle on that day? St Chapelle isn't far from Notre Dame and is a real gem. The Louvre may tire you out after 4 hours. Notre Dame needs a good hour, as does Ste. Chapelle. You can fit in time on this day for a relaxing lunch after the Louvre, and can still spend longer at ND and Ste, C. You may even find a half hour to check out the bouquinistes across the bridge from ND. That is always fun and so very Paris.
Change the Orsay to another day and perhaps move some of the other sights around to fit time-wise and logistically regarding proximity to each other. I agree with Pam that the Champs Elysees is a disappointment...chain stores on end. Take the metro or a bus to the Arc de Triomph and look down the Champs, or look up from the Place de la Concorde.

Colmar as a day trip on day 9 is a bit too far, IMO. As Pam says, there is so much to see and do in Paris that you can fill up that day in a heartbeat. And Versailles really does take a whole day, but you can get back to Paris early enough for a one hour ride on the Seine and a late-ish dinner (say at 9:00 p.m.).
Overall, your plans are thoughtful. Be sure to factor in time to sit at a cafe and enjoy the ambience esp. of Paris.
And in traveling from town to town, factor in time for checking out of lodgings and having breakfast before hitting the road, getting gas, bathroom stops, finding your new lodgings (and finding parking!), and checking in to the new lodgings. Parking at some sights are a 20-40 walk from the attraction. Allow time for that and for dawdling over the souvenirs and for waiting in lines (e.g. security lines).
Days 10, 11 and 12 sound good.
Have fun!

Hi Judy, really appreciate the thoughtful reply. It all makes sense, and I am going to make some changes to consider all your points, and make things a bit less ambitious!

Do you know if I can return my car in Amboise, and take a train back to Paris? Just want to avoid driving in Paris even to return a car.
