Checking out rates for October in Paris and need some suggestions for the Marais or St. Germain. We have stayed near the Eiffel tower and on the Ile St. Louis before and loved both areas...just want a change. Any suggestions?
What's your targeted price range per night in Euro and when you say "we", how many people are you planning to fit into a hotel room? 2, 3, 4? If you look at listings on Booking.com during your time frame, you can restrict your search to just those 2 neighborhoods and the reviews on Booking can only be posted if the person reviewing has actually booked and completed their stay at that particular hotel (unlike TripAdvisor where anyone can lie about staying somewhere and give it a glowing or really bad review). Doesn't mean you need to make your reservation through Booking.com, but you can use it to narrow your search and see what other travelers have to say about a specific property.
There are 2 of us....did not know I could do a specified search on booking.com......thanks!
I've stayed twice at Turenne le Marais. It's a nice hotel, very clean, and very convenient.
Careful with booking.com. Their ratings may be artificially high. I stayed at a place in Beaune two weeks ago that was horrid - literally like picking up a bad Italian hotel and placing it in France. The bed and linens needed to be replaced a couple decades ago. I could live with that but it had no hot water, it was at best lukewarm (I'm not exagerating). I asked the owner because I thought he forgot to turn on my water heater. He said that was what it was (just like Italy). When I rated it on booking.com I rated the place bad on everything except location and it came up as "good" overall and wouldn't let me change it. By that measure, sleeping in my rental car in a central parking lot would have been "good" accomodation.
I stayed at the Legend St Germain last May and it was a very good experience--big room overlooking Rue des Rennes with a balcony, very clean and comfortable, sound-proofed windows thus perfectly quiet at night, excellent front desk staff. 5 minute walk in either direction to 2 major metro lines and oodles of restaurants and shops on the street, near the Jardin du Luxembourg. Typing all this makes me want to go back!
My husband and I are looking forward to our Cobblestones Paris apartment in Le Marais next month:

Lots of beautiful apartments in Marais.

Turenne Le Marais is a good choice, and was just renovated one year ago.
It's a very convenient location - bus, Metro, walking...
If you want Saint Germain, you might look at Hotel Residence Henri IV, which is also extremely convenient for walking, bus and Metro.
I like the Grand Hotel des Balcons. Note that the rooms are more plain than the fancy lobby, but they're perfectly serviceable. The location is great (right between the Odeon theater and the Odeon metro stop) and the price is right (for me - you haven't specified your price point). http://www.balcons.com/en/index.html
