We are arriving from the US, and are looking for a place to stop and visit, and get a rest. Before we travel to the Rhine river the next day. We will be traveling near Metz, and on to Germany. Any suggestions?

Nancy could be a very nice city to visit.
Other ppossibilities would be Riquewihr Colmar, or Strasbourg which are along the French part of the Rhine, Castle of Le Haut Koenigsbourg, Obernai, le Grand Ballon d'Alsace, Wissembourg (such a wonderful little town) and Bernardville where there is an old abbey nearby.
Also of interest are Gerardmer (nice scenery) and Verdun if you are interested in the 1st world war.
Try to eat in Alsace it is delicious!!

If you are flying into Paris that day and thinking of taking a train eastward, be aware that the cheaper tickets are not refundable or changeable for the TGV (fast-train) that you might want to take. For instance, a few departures from Charles de Gualle TGV station run direct to Champagne Ardennes TGV station (then it's a quick, regional connection to Reims) or the same reserved trains also continue to Lorraine and Strasbourg. You would have to allow at least 3 hours between flight arrival and train departure at CDG, and preferably more, in case of flight delays.
