Place to stay in Mont St-Michel

My husband and I are trying to find a room on the island of Mont St-Michel for a night in late May. Never thought that we could not find a room with 8 months in advance to plan! Any ideas from anyone if we cannot find a room on the island? Looks like there a lot nearby....suggestions?
Also we need suggestions for a one day American D-Day tour in Normandy. We had hoped to get Dale Booth but he is already booked (!!!!!). Anyone got another good tour group to try?
Thanks so much!

Unfortunately there are a limited number of rooms on the Mont. A very rough guess is about 50 rooms on the Mont itself. Some travelers (including me) think it's worth it to get one if you can, because of the ambience or atmosphere of walking around at night. You're probably too early, but if later you find that the rooms are all booked, then sleeping in the area, as close as reasonably possible, is your alternative. The main thing is to be close enough to walk around on the Mont after the hordes of day trippers leave, which is usually be 5 or 6pm.

Jane this far in advance many hotels simply do not take reservations, their sites will appear to have no rooms available, so don't panic yet. I would email the hotels directly and ask about rooms.

I have run into this problem many times, and not just in France, I am presently planning our trip for next May and have had to contact several hotels directly rahter then using their online booking( we are visiting several countries)

Did you try emailing the hotels directly? I have noticed that many times , websites such as booking.com and hotels.com do not have rates this far out and so their sites say "no rooms available" For our upcoming trip to Spain next spring, I found that to be the case. By emailing hotels directly, I not only got reservations after booking.com said "no space for dates", but I got better rates in most every case. It doesn't seem likely that hotels on the Mont , no matter how few there are, would be sold out this far in advance. We stayed at La Croix Blanche and enjoyed it very much. Our tour in Normandy began in Bayeux and was with Overlord Tours.....excellent and highly recommended.

Hi Jane!

We just returned from France. We stayed at Auberge St. Pierre on the Mont and it was great. Not the cheapest but we figured the chances of returning were slim and were encouraged to spend the night from travelers on this forum. It was wonderful being there at night without the crowds and with all the lights on. So romantic and beautiful! I hope you can find a place to stay there. Good luck!

I have to say it is well worth staying on the island overnight. You get the whole island almost to yourselves after the throngs of tourists leave for the day. You can walk the whole island unimpeded and it is more than charming. The Auberge Saint -Pierre is a great place to stay and has a very nice restaurant with fresh from the sea food and bottles of Normandy cider. They also have a separate annexed building of rooms higher up on the island with great clean and comfortable rooms. We took our then 8 year old and we spent the night exploring and enjoying medieval charm and meeting the locals. The next morning we woke up early and strolled into a restaurant down the street that invited us in for coffee even though they were not open yet and we had a nice little breakfast as the island awoke. We then made our way to the abbey and were amongst the first guests in line. It was beautiful stay and the dream of a life time. Our daughter cried buckets as we departed and wouldn't stop looking at it until it was a spec on the horizon. If you can stay I would not pass up the chance.

We would have been disappointed if we had not stayed overnight on MSM: the evening and early morning times without the crowds was wonderful. Best part was getting up real early and going up to the chapel to hear the monks & nuns chanting their morning prayers.

Jane, My daughter and I stayed on the Mont back in May. We stayed at La Vielle Auberge, Grande Rue, 33 (0) 2.33.60.14.34. Room was dated and a little musty but clean and very large. We had a balcony which was wonderful although it was a little brisk that day. So glad we stayed on the Mont because its so crowded that we checked into our room and hung out on the balcony and relaxed til the crowds were gone - around 6 - and then explored the Mont. Good luck.

Jane, you are too early. I have directly contacted one of the hotels on the island, Hotel du Guesclin, as we are planning a mid-May stay and they told me to get back to them in October. I will be e-mailing the hotel back on Oct 1st to make sure I get a spot. Hope that helps.
