Place to stay in French Alps

I am looking for ideas for a place to stay for three nights in the French Alps while traveling between Beaunne and the Cinque Terre in late June. We've been to Annecy and Chamonix and want to see something new. We'll be travelling by rail and bus. We love to hike and mountain bike and crave small mountain villages. Ideas?

Would Switzerland do in a pinch? How about Taveyannaz in the Villars-Gryon-Les Diablerets region. Its just off the main rail line between Dijon and Milan. Lots of hiking, access by narrow gauge rail, mountain lifts are running, cows, cheese, who could ask for more?
