Pau >> Lourdes and Accommodations?

Hello! Planning my family's (ages 18+) European trip for this December/January and need some advice for our Pau and Lourdes leg of the trip:

  • Are the taxis reliable from Pau airport to Lourdes (by the Domain/pilgrimage site)? Or what form of transportation would you recommend for that?

  • Recs for hotels in Lourdes area? What hotel booking site do you recommend for booking in Lourdes, or should we book directly through the hotel?

Thanks all!

Check the French national railroad site for the schedule. There are a lot of trains from to Lourdes, but the schedule's not terribly regular. There are also some buses, but fewer of them as far as I can tell.

I'm not familiar with Lourdes. If the train station doesn't get you close enough, you'll certainly be able to get a taxi from there. The two cities are about 25 miles apart, so a taxi from Pau wouldn't be cheap. I don't know whether you'd have to (in effect) pay for the 50-mile round-trip. If you only have to pay for the outbound trip and there are four of you (and you can all squeeze into one taxi with your luggage??), a taxi might not be too costly.

I use booking.com for most of my hotels. It's never a bad idea, after making a tentative selection, to try to find the hotel's own website. Sometimes you'll get a better deal there.

Thanks for your reply, @acraven! We are a family of four and will be taking a train out of Lourdes (to Paris) so are only worried about the inbound to Lourdes transportation. I'll just have to compare pricing of one taxi vs. the bus, as I think most others aren't too familiar with Lourdes either... Booking.com is great, thank you for that rec as well, and I will definitely be sure to contact the hotels we're interested in to see if we can get a better deal than online. :)
