Aloha, my husband and I are planning a few days in Bordeaux (sans car), then picking up a car to go around the countryside. We like being based some place central with lots of restaurant choices. I thought of saint emilion.... but now I am concerned the handful of places to park listed, are not enough in July (sad we had to travel in July to france....)
Please, any advice would be appreciated: should we avoid the potential hassle of parking (the locations appear limited, especially for july) and find a different base ? Or am I being overly cautious and parking won't be too much of an issue.... ?
When you have a car don't think of your base as a city/village, think of your base as your hotel/B&B/Apt. If your lodging has free parking, you will be fine. If you go into a village/city early in the day you will find parking. Think about finding a nice place to stay outside any village/city. It is usually less expensive, quiet and with a car you are very mobile without a timetable.
We went to St. Emilion in the fall one year (not summer) and it was extremely hard to find a parking place. I had to circle around for about 20 minutes before I found one. You might consider taking a bus or train to St. Emilion. Peter
Thank you so much Peter!!!
This will be our 12th trip to France and we usually do gites (so we can stay for a month and I can practice my french), I'm going to choose a different base, very helpful, thank you again!
Yes, we found St. Émilion parking difficult. You would want to be sure your rental has parking.
