We are planning to rent a car a car at the Caen Train Station and driving to Bayeux and spending a few days. We are going to do a Normandy tour without the car. We are looking for a place to stay and I've seen a lot of conflicting information about parking. Most say street parking is available for 3 hours and free parking at night in some lots. Not sure where to put our car while we are gone for a full day tour of Normandy and don't want to receive a ticket.
Have you asked your hotel or lodging about parking?
Here is some information you may or may not have found this: https://www.bayeux.fr/fr/stationnement-bayeux
I would suggest staying at a hotel with parking or if you have made reservations already and your lodging doesn't have dedicated parking inquire as to what they direct guests with vehicles to do. The city center is very pedestrian friendly and there are parking lots I recall when I stayed last summer we found on street parking and a small lot that we paid at a kiosk. The link I shared is the most up to date info I could find on the parking situation.
Stay in the city center at a hotel or bnb with parking. Then you just walk over to the Pl de Quebec parking area where all of the tour vans pick up for the tours. It's not a huge lot and I have no idea if it's timed parking in that lot, but street parking is not something you would want to rely on. It's very crowded and very limited. We stayed in an airbnb, owned by a local, with assigned parking and never moved our car except to arrive and depart.
Bayeux city center is quite compact and so walkable and charming! You'll love it!
Thank you!
We are staying at Hotel d’Argouges. It has free parking. It is about a 10 minute walk to where we meet for the WW2 tour.
Parking is difficult but we found lodging with parking. Sometimes I parking may be in a lot down the street, but if you search for lodging with parking specifically included you will be fine. We loved Bayuex
We stayed at the Hotel Reine Mathilde in September 2022. Their confirmation email stated:
Parking: no private parking but lots of public parkings are near the hotel. You pay on site. Otherwise you can park in the free car park located at Boulevard Maréchal Leclerc, at 8 minutes by walk
Yes there were public lots nearby and you could park overnight for free, but not all day (3 hour limit). So unless you were using the car every day it didn't work. We never saw any street parking availability. The free car park referenced above did work for us but was a bit of a walk. We heard it could be full at times, but we never had an issue
If your hotel doesn't include a convenient option for parking, consider Boulevard Marechal LeClerc as Patricia mentoned. It's the one suggested by Overlord Tours for their all-day excursions. After our own tour we found it so convenient and hassle free that we subsequently used it nearly every day for excursions into the city.
It was a while ago but we enjoyed our stay at the RS recommended Logis Les Remparts. There was ample free parking practically outside the front door.
I don't know when the local council enacted the change, but many if not most of the formerly free lots in the city center are now restricted to a 4 hour maximum, which we discovered somewhat to our chagrin during a visit last September. Parking there is still free, but now you have to display a time card on your dashboard ... which you have to have purchased beforehand at one of the local shops. The cost of the card was only a few Euros.
Most of the truly free lots (ie of unlimited duration) are located around the periphery of the city center with the most convenient (IMHO) being the one along Blvd. Marechal LeClerc ... about an 8 minute walk to Pl. du Quebec where our Overlord tour departed from.
All that said, the cost for the free lots was really pretty nominal, although we were only there during the day.
Thank you all for the responses
