Parking/Driving in Strasbourg France??

My travels are now sending me to France. I have a rental car, which I want to use for the rest of my trip, but my friends have said that this is not a good idea for driving to Strasbourg. I will be coming from cologne and the best transportation I can find is a 5 hour bus ride which sounds completely stressful to me.

I would much prefer to take the car so I can drive to the south of Germany and enjoy the countryside with the car....... but It would mean parking the car in Strasbourg for a few days. Do they have any safe car parks or is it unsafe to leave a car there overnight? are there any car parks outside of town?

I don't know where you get 5 hours by bus from. There are plenty of train connections from Cologne to Strasbourg taking around 4 hours. For example (times from www.bahn.de ):

Köln Hbf 08:55 Offenburg 11:27
Offenburg 12:34 Strasbourg 13:04
(Total 4h09)

Köln Hbf 09:55 Mannheim Hbf 11:23
Mannheim Hbf 11:36 Offenburg 12:32
Offenburg 13:04 Strasbourg 13:34
(Total 3h39m)

But, if you want to take a car I would ask the hotel. Hotels in the city centre are unlikely to have parking, but those just outside the centre may, and Strasbourg has a good tram system to get you into the centre.

There are a number of underground car parks in the center of Strasbourg, although driving there can be pretty bad. My one time arriving there by car was on a busy weekend, and I never could get close enough to a car park entrance to see if it was full. By a stroke of luck I found an empty space near the center, and since it was the weekend I didn't have to feed the meter.

I used the parking garage next to the train station or on-street parking the week I was there visiting one of my kids who was living there. The garage would close overnight and was closed on weekends, so if you put your car in a garage, beware the hours.

I found this: http://www.parcus.com/en/parcus-car-parks,715,en.html

As you suggest in your OP, driving TO Strasbourg is not the same as driving IN Strasbourg. It's a medieval town with narrow, one-way streets, canals and bridges, and for tourists, it's very walkable. We did, in fact, rent a car on the outskirts of Strasbourg (after three pleasant days in Strasbourg) to begin a tour of the "wine route" to the south.

Presumably you know from your business driving that garage stalls are very small in Europe, and the passages in the garage are much narrower than in American garages. I noticed on my last trip to Washington DC that (surprise) many garages are closed there on weekends .... so we shouldn't think of Strasbourg as a second-class city!

You might want to check for an Umwelt Plakett [sticker] (I mean, at rental time... ) on your rental car before entering German towns and cities. I don't know if France has urban restriction zones. My own feeling is that five hours of driving is much more stressful than using public transportation, but that's a matter of opinion. There certainly have been some posts here about annoying highway congestion in Germany.

Not to change the subject, but if you plan to take a boat ride on the middle Rhine, the car will be an annoyance. But you can use the fast, comfortable, frequent train to get back to the car after boating from Bingen to Boppard, for example. Make sure your luggage isn't visible while parked.

Check Rick's book on France. He has very good directions to a lot on the edge of town. It is reasonably priced and your ticket from the lot is good for up to seven people on the tram into and back from town. I have used it for day parking and it is like having a license to steal, they really are trying to reduce traffic in the city center which is a mess. Check and see if there is a way to use this option for long term.

We stayed here Comfort Hotel Strasbourg - Montagne Verte. It is a bit out of the way. Get GPS co-ordinate directions to the hotel. It is a 20 minute walk to town, but parking is free. We walked beside a river from the hotel to town and back. Very relaxing. There is a bus to town, but it is a 10 minute walk to the bus stop so we just walked onward to the town. My wife and I loved the 10Euro all you can eat breakfast. If you get there early, they have Champagne. The hotel has no A/C and no screens on windows. A European normal. We carry a small, portable fan when we travel in the summer. It has been a lifesaver. The hotel windows will open.

The Elsau Parking & Relais as mentioned in the RS Guidebook is very convenient just off the auto route , the fee includes the tram ride to and from the center. I cannot say if it is suitable for overnight parking.
