Paris, Yellow Vests, Bastille Day

Hello -

What do you think? Will traditional Bastille Day celebrations be disrupted by Yellow Vest protests or will they go on?

Also, are travelers to Paris being affected by the protests? Meaning are tourists having to avoid certain sites and/or finding it difficult to get around because of protests? Are there more frequent and far-reaching transportation strikes and/or delays?

We have an unexpected opportunity to go to Paris in July but can go somewhere else instead if it's problematic (we have spent a lot of time in Paris, so it is not a once-in-a-lifetime-must-go trip.)

Thanks!

Here is a list of the various threads on this forum regarding this issue. These are all within the last 6 months so should be relevant. I found this list by searching on 'yellow vests' on the forum search function. You should get some good information from reading some of these threads. From what I gather from reading them is that the consensus of those here who have visited Paris since the protests began and those living in Paris is that it's not an issue for tourists.

Thanks, Nancy!

A lot of these deal with safety/fear of and that's not my primary concern. A lot of them are lecturing people asking reasonable questions (I never understand the lectures. :) )

I am mostly wondering about Bastille Day celebrations as I could see those being targeted and it's one of the reasons for us going in July. Then, I am also just wondering if there is any hassle/delays going on with sites/transportation.

I was there for the Saturday March 30 protest day. It was no problem at all for me. I checked the RATP app in the AM at breakfast to see what was closed. None of the closures affected my plans so I went on with my day.

(editing to add after your reply to Nancy - I went from Ecole Militaire stop to The Cluny, walked back to Saint-Sulpice, walked to Church of Saint-Germain-des Pres, walked to the Delacroix Museum, walked to the Rodin Museum, walked back to the Rue Cler area. Never saw a Yellow vest. By late Saturday afternoon the entire Esplanade in front of Les Invalides was packed with families and others enjoying the sun.)

The week before last things were more wide-ranging according to various people/reports but last Saturday was less.

I'd go. I'd probably not stay in the Arc de Triomphe area or along the Champs-Elysee but those aren't "my" neighborhoods anyway, lol!

I WOULD download the RATP app as well as the one for C'Est la Greve.

I understand your concerns. Obviously a trip is a large expense and to get a place where one is not free to go where one wants is more than just a simple annoyance. Lately, although the Champs area is well protected, protests have been moving to other areas of Paris. There is no way of telling now where the protests, if any, will take place during the time you plan to be here. Although tourists and residents are not targeted there are huge inconveniences. A recent survey in Le Parisien stated that 70 percent of Parisiens had adjusted their Saturday activities. I live in East Paris and my Saturday bus connections are usually diverted, detoured, seldom running etc. May Day which used to be a lovely family holiday has seen the second year of violence driving families away. Looking at the crowd pictures one notices few women and children. That never used to be. I wish I could offer you guarantees, but there just aren't any.

This website gives some idea of planned protest activities

We just returned from France, although we never got anywhere near Paris, or any other big city. I had totally forgotten about the yellow vest protests, but when we were returning to the town of Cremieu for our last night, we approached a roundabout/rotary and saw masses of yellow vested people. However, they were not disrupting traffic, and it actually had a party atmosphere. There were lots of children playing, and some grills set up to cook meals.
