Paris weather

My wife and I are returning to Paris after a long absence to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. We are looking at a 2 week plus stay in either second half of April and first half of May or late May and first half of June. We are in our 70s and are concerned about the heat waves in recent years. What kind of weather could we expect during these periods? Merci, Jim S.

There is just no way to predict this. Heat waves are starting to happen in May. This current one is a real doozy. Could you handle it? Most likely but it will certainly change your itinerary some and you must make sure fo have an air conditionné room.

The weather experts can’t predict because too much depends on ocean currents. It’s too soon to tell if the heat is an episode lasting a few years, or if future decades will tell us if this is now normal. Forty years ago we had a whopper of a heatwave in Paris followed by five sunless summers. Go earlier when you are less likely to have a dome of hot African air trapped in place over France.

Well, late April, early May has a better chance of being warm but not hot than June or July, and probably more pleasant weather than January or February, and that is about all you can bank on.

Even for April/May, I would get a place with air conditioning just in case. One advantage tourists have over locals, is that many hotels have AC, many apartments do not. I do not think early May would see the temps they are getting now, which is causing reduced hours or closures of some sights.

I agree with all the responses. We were just there in Mid May and had nice weather then rainy then very hot - so - no way to tell. Just get a hotel with AC and bring clothes for all possibilities....

Because I won't travel in weather that's too warm, I visit Paris twice annually, in late March and late November/early December. The weather at those times is APT to be 50-60's, which is my wheelhouse for enjoying traveling. Even the 70's are too warm for me to really enjoy myself. That isn't to say there aren't days that are cooler, but they're not apt to be warmer.

It's worked for me for the last ten years or so. YMMV

I was in Paris this year from April 15-May 6. From my Trip Report:

"Weather: It was apparently the driest April in Paris in years! I had absolutely NO rain until the last weekend. It was chilly my first few days, in fact one of the 1st mornings the guy at reception said…it’s cold out there you need a jacket, hahaha. I thought…harrumph, I’m an Idaho gal. Well I froze my Idaho bee-hind off sitting in a cold metal chair in the Luxembourg Gardens. Yes, I wore more clothing after that, hahaha! Some days during the 2nd week it was so warm I was hot in just a short sleeve tee and the travel pants but not enough that I was miserable. To me the best tactic for Paris is to always have a waterproof rain layer, a puffy vest, a long sleeve topper and some shirts that will be good if it gets warm. I also made good use of a pop-up hand fan I have. I got them on Amazon and have one stuck in every purse and personal item."

As others mentioned....this year's weather does not guarantee anything for next year or in fact ever again.

BUT....I would choose your earlier dates. I would not risk late May or June to avoid heat.

I will add a caution that if you or your wife have pollen allergies, this can be a heavy pollen time in Paris. I will need to do something next time I travel during this time frame as the blooming Horse chestnut trees drive me nuts.

Jim,
Most of our times in Paris have been in April, sometimes bleeding into May. Even if you run into some rain, it is Paris! (After all, they wrote a song about April in Paris!) We have never been unhappy with Paris in April or May. If it rains, visit a museum or church or opera house or monument or shop or bookstore, or sit out a shower in a cafe with an aperitif or coffee and maybe a patisserie. Amusez-vous bien!

Was there in late May a few years back and the first night it was so hot we couldn't sleep, and then a cold front moved through and it was nice. You just never know. Even around here it's gone from a high in the 70s to near 100F over the past two months. I'd strongly recommend accommodations with AC because a poor night's sleep compromises the next day's activities to say the least.

We were in France in 2024, late May into June. Our time there was incredibly hot and as you are seeing in the media the lack of air conditioning is real. We had AC in our hotel in Cap St. Jean Ferret which was great. While in the Loire our lodging stated there was AC but they did not turn it on at that time of year, stated we could open the windows to cool down. Our time in Paris the heat was the worst, cities due to lack of trees etc. become like heat islands I swear! Our hotel stated there as AC but it didn't work. I went back and forth with the staff who said they have strict rules and care about the environment so they do not really use it. All this to say you might book lodging that states you will have AC but it could be 50-50 if that will be the case when you get there as some have it but will not turn it on during certain times of year if at all.

donnellyjen74, that's sobering. I agree about protecting the environment although when temps hit 90F perhaps human health could also be considered, particularly those over a certain age or with health issues. Flexibility and common sense should come into play.

I was there March 2024, flew in the day after St Patrick's day and hit a beautiful week of spring weather. I think the 19th it hit the low 70s in fact.... That Saturday, the 23rd, was rainy and then I left on Sunday but according to things I saw online, it got really rainy and chilly for the balance of the spring, so timing is absolutely everything.

The reviews on booking.com will probably provide information on a hotel's air conditionibg, inckuding whether the hotel is reluctant to turn it on before mid-summer.

We were in Paris three days last year, arriving on April 1. Weather was sunny and 70-ish all three days. On arrival day, it was just cool enough in shadow to be glad for the puffy jacket that was then a bit too much in the sun. Most of the rest of the time I wore a light windbreaker jacket and was still warm sometimes. All to say it was warmer than we expected even in early, early April. Our hotel had air conditioning but our room was still quite warm. I'm not sure I'd want to chance June these days, though as others point out, it's still Paris. :-)
