We want to spend one day in Rouen the latter part of June. I see we take an SNCF train from Paris Gare Saint-Lazare. Do we need to buy tickets in advance or just that day? There will be 3 of us. Thanks.
You can take a TER train taking 1 hour and 37 minutes, or a faster Nomad train taking 1 hour and 17 minutes for slightly more money. Standard prices are about 24 EUR and there are discounts available for advance nonrefundable tickets.
I just purchased this train ticket directly from https://www.sncf-connect.com/app/home/shop/results/outward
And was able to get tickets for 9 euros.
If you decide to take a TER, there's no financial reason to buy the ticket in advance, and there's no risk the train will fill up. TERs don't have assigned seats.
Just remember that when you buy one of those discount tickets, they're pretty much like airline tickets. You either make that train or forfeit your ticket. You can't use it on another train. But if you know you are going on a certain day and can live with a certain time, for 9 EUR, why not?
Sharon, Thank you for your post! We were also wanting to travel from Paris to Rouen by train on July 2nd. Your post prompted us to look at prices for our trip. We looked on the SNCF website and saw they are working on the train lines between Paris and Rouen on that day. The bus is probably in our future for that leg of our journey. We are a group of 5 adults. Not sure if they will add more busses for that day or if we should reserve our bus tickets now. We are just appreciative that this won't be a surprise after we are in Europe.
