We will be taking a day trip from Paris to Reims in early June, preferably via the TGV.
Is it advisable to purchase tickets online prior to the departure date, or is it ok to buy them at the station the morning of departure ?

Can't hurt as the price will increase for the train times you want to take as capacity decreases.

tickets are cheapest when released 3 or 4 months ahead; as cheap tickets sell out, they get increasingly expensive. Last minute you are likely to pay as much as 2 or 3 times more. I once lucked out and got a cheap ticket just 3 days before a day trip to Reims -- but that was unusual. You are probably too late for a good deal, but it only gets more expensive as you approach the date of travel.
