I will be traveling on a river cruise starting in Lyon. Was wondering if it’ll be easy and economical traveling from Paris to the port (river cruise extensions are quite pricey). Any suggestions on the best way to do this (I’m not going until 2023)
The train is your best bet.
Agree train. That is what we did in 2017
Take the TGV and book several months ahead for good prices. And spend a couple of nights in Lyon before the trip -- it is quite wonderful. We did a two night side trip from Paris and packed a lot into one afternoon/evening, a full day, and a morning. Visit the Basilica on the hill, the Roman ruins up there, and the traboules (antique passageways and staircases) in the old town. And dine at a bouchon or two.
Thank you for the information
Two train companies now cover the route from Paris to Lyon: the French railways (SNCF), with hourly-or-so TGVs, and Trenitalia, with 5 daily trains or so. They take the same time (2 hrs). Compare the two; Trenitalia is usually cheaper at short notice but fares should be roughly equivalent in advance.
Also note that there are several railway station in Lyon. You want a train that stops at Part-Dieu or Perrache, not at Saint-Exupéry which is outside the city at the airport.
