Paris to Norway

What is the best way to get from Paris to Norway that does not involve flying? We would like to see the scenery. Boat, train, swimming? Thanks, Virginia

All train: Paris - Koeln - Hamburg - Copenhagen - Gothenburg - Oslo, staying overnight in Hamburg or Copenhagen.

Times according to my paper European Rail Timetable:

Depart Paris Nord 0755 (final destination Dortmund). Arrive Dortmund 1241, take 1321 to Hamburg. Arrive Hamburg 1613. Leave Hamburg by 1728 for Copenhagen, arriving 2219. Stay overnight in Copenhagen. Following morning, take an early train to Copenhagen Airport and take the 0826 train from there to Gothenburg, arriving 1205. Then take the 1300 from Gothenburg to Oslo, arriving 1652.

If you absolutely don't want to stay overnight anywhere, the only remaining overnight train into Scandinavia is the Berlin - Malmoe sleeper (Malmoe is the Swedish town just across the strait from Copenhagen), which runs on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday evenings only, leaving Berlin Hbf at 1928. But Paris - Berlin is quite a bit out of your way.

Another possibility involving train plus ferry is to go to Kiel (near Hamburg) and take the Color Line ship from Kiel to Oslo, which leaves at 1400 daily and arrives at 1000 the following day. Be warned that these German - Scandinavian overnight ferries are sometimes notorious for a rowdy "party hostel" type atmosphere, especially at the weekends. There are now no scheduled ferry services remaining from France, Belgium or the Netherlands to Scandinavia due to budget airlines.

For ideas on how to book all these journeys (it's unlikely that you'll be able to buy in one go unless you use a specialist no-flights European travel agent) see Seat 61.

Other ferry options are from Denmark to Norway. Either the Copenhagen-Oslo night ferry or one of the ferries from Hirtshals in the far north of Denmark to either Bergen, Kristiansand or Larvik.
