Paris to Madrid (Jan 6-15): Seeking Route-Friendly City Recommendations

Hello All!

I’m flying with my mom from Dallas→Paris Jan 6 (arriving in the morning) and Madrid→Dallas Jan 15 (departing very early). This gives us about 8 full days.

I've lived in Paris (3 months) and we have visited multiple times, plus been to Madrid 4 times, so both capitals are familiar territory. Surprisingly, I've never explored other French cities despite my time there, and haven't ventured beyond Madrid or Barcelona in Spain either.

My father was recently killed by a drunk driver. My mother wants to experience more of Europe, and she's considering places where we might spend extended time in the future. Good walkability is really important to us, and we'd love somewhere that feels a bit quieter and more peaceful. This trip is somewhat of a reconnaissance for a potential city where I could return with both my mom and my 5-year-old daughter. Again, I realize such a trip in 8 days is almost pointless, but our schedule is very tight over the next few months and wanted to at least get away and see something while we can to at least give us something to think about. Since we're already familiar with Paris and Madrid and are mainly using them as arrival/departure points, we're actually open to a faster-paced itinerary than most people might recommend. If it means getting a feel for two or even three smaller cities during this short window, we're willing to move around more than the typical advice would suggest. We know it's not a leisurely European vacation, but for us, this trip is really about just getting a sense of places for potential future trips.

We’re hoping to find places that are walkable and safe, with that sweet spot of being calm yet still having life and energy. I want my mom to experience the authentic, charming side of Europe, the kind of place where you feel embraced by local life rather than overwhelmed. Honestly, I was a bit taken aback by how much the homelessness and run down situation in Paris has changed since I last lived there, so we're hoping for somewhere that feels a bit more settled. No offense, Paris, you are still my favorite city. Most importantly, I'm looking for a city I'd be excited to return to with my young daughter, so somewhere welcoming to families would be wonderful.

Cities we're considering: In France, we've been looking at Strasbourg, Toulouse, Lyon, Dijon, and Angers. In Spain, Oviedo, Zaragoza, or Bilbao have caught our attention, though I realize the routing might not make as much sense for those.

We're completely open to spending just 2 nights in Paris and 1 or 2 in Madrid, leaving time for 1-2 additional cities. Given the tight timeframe, which city (or cities) makes the most sense logistically while matching what we're looking for?

I spent 10 years in corporate travel and have visited 7 European countries, so comfortable navigating logistics, just struggling to narrow down options for such a short but meaningful trip.

One last thought...Even if the timing doesn't work out for this particular trip, I'd still love to hear which cities you think would be the best fit for what we're looking for.

Thank you for any insights!

From a logistical standpoint, Iberia operates direct flights to Madrid from Lyon, Strasbourg and Toulouse. Also from Bordeaux and Nantes.

Mid-January isn't the best time to visit a French city to determine if it's worth returning later for its peaceful and quiet atmosphere.
Precisely because the "quieter and peaceful" aspect changes dramatically depending on the season. In most places, the peaceful and quiet month of January is nothing like the hustle and bustle of late spring and summer.

We did a trip a couple of years ago from Madrid to Bilbao and San Sebastian.

We then moved from there by train to Bordeaux, and again by train to Paris.

You could look at something similar in the opposite direction.

We loved the wine in Bordeaux, and the food was incredible in Bilbao and San Sebastian.

I'd argue against Strasbourg unless you want to spend the whole week around there, but you have to understand that all those pretty little towns close up this time of year. It's hard to find anything open. They're pretty (when the sun comes out) but it's cold and wet and grey right now and will be for another three months. This is the time of year when the locals there go skiing or to Tenerife. And Strasbourg is a very expensive city, even in the off season.

Lyon and Dijon you can easily see just by train between the two. Pick one to stay in and visit the other. But again, they're nothing like what they become when spring hits. Still, if you like museums and regional food, it's not hard to spend a few days in either.

I like Toulouse, and it's ideally located if you want to see that part of France, which is very different than Paris or the Alsace-Lorraine. And you're close to the caves at Lascaux and Bordeaux, but the caves are closed in the winter, and a lot of the vineyards will be also.

Unless you're rally good at steep, narrow, mountain driving I seriously recommend flying over the Pyrenees. The number of wrecked cars in the storage area on the route through Andorra is impressive.

Why not look at Malaga or Mercia? The weather will be better, They're quite beautiful areas, very different than Madrid, and worth a few days each. Or pick a place on the French coast between Marseille and Nice. You only have a week, and that's barely enough time to explore that area.

Here's a schedule that gives you 1.5 days in each place, not something I'd want to do. Strasbourg is a geographic outlier, as is Oviedo, but the train from Paris and then to Dijon is only two hours each. Lyon to Barcelona and then on to Zaragoza is a haul, but RENFE trains are comfortable and in certain first class tickets, they serve meals with wine and coffee at your seat. SNCF doesn't have the meal service at your seat. Toulouse and Angers are different trainlines that don't fit into this itinerary.
Here's a schedule using nights:
1/ 6-Paris
1/7-Paris
⅛ Paris to Strasbourg, sleep Strasbourg
1/9 Strasbourg
1/10 Dijon
1/10-Dijon
1-11-Lyon
1/12-Lyon
1/13-Lyon to Zaragoza 6.5 hours, sleep Zaragoa
1/14 Zaragoza
1/15 Madrid
1/16 fly out of Madrid

I've been to and liked all of Elizabeth's very convenient suggestions--as well as nearly all the other options mentioned, but travel time to some of them would be significant.

The probable schedule for the future trip would affect the places I'd want to check out on your impending trip. I've been to Zaragoza in the summer and would discourage a plan to spend more than one or two days there at that time of year, because it is likely to be brutally hot.

I personally would recommend spending time on or very near the Mediterranean. Carcassonne, Valencia and Málaga come to mind. Better weather.
