Paris to Dordogne - Take Train to Bordeaux or Brive?

After visiting Paris, my friend and I planning to spend several days in the Dordogne area (basing in Beynac) and were trying to figure out the best way to get there. We plan to take one train south to a nearby town/city (either Bordeaux or Brive) and then pick up a rental car and drive the rest of the way. The question is: should we go via Bordeaux or Brive?

There is a TGV train to Bordeaux that takes about 3 hours. From there, it's about a 2-hour drive to Beynac. The train to Brive is a non-TGV that takes about 4 hours, but from there it's only about a 1-hour drive to Beynac. So either way, it will take about 5 hours. Basically, the Bordeaux route has 3 hours on a train and 2 hours in a car and the Brive route has 4 hours on a train and 1 hour in a car.

Most of the posts I've read recommend going via Brive instead of Bordeaux, but they don't say why. I'm leaning toward Brive because it seems like a prettier drive (the drive from Bordeaux seems to be mostly via highway). The costs seem comparable, although there is an IDTGV ticket available now for one Bordeaux train for about $30 less than the Brive train.

Does anyone have a preference? If so, why? Thanks in advance for any insights anyone can provide!

Can you drive a stick shift? If not, and you need an automatic, you'll probably have to go to Bordeaux. Check AutoEurope's website to see what type of cars you can get in each city.
Also, car rentals will have longer hours and weekend hours at a major train station rather than a town.

On the other hand, two of us just dealt with a very pushy counter person in Bordeaux who put unwanted charges on our Europcar rental. Autoeurope took them off and refunded the money, but watch for this pushy young woman in Bordeaux.

Yes! I've been driving a stick shift my entire life (my friend can drive a stick too). I did a quick check to make sure there actually ARE rental cars in Brive for when we need one (late September) and there seem to be plenty available--although not large ones, but we don't need anything bigger than a compact anyway.

If we go the Brive route, we'll be taking a 9:40am train out of Paris (Austerlitz station) and should arrive around 2pm. This will be on a Thursday, so presumably the rental car places will be open.

This is a real "other things being equal" question because of your careful research already. I'd opt for the train to Bordeaux for two reasons: (1) the chance to see something of Bordeaux itself, the Gironde, and the towns on the way upstream to Beynac as you drive there, and (2) the probably greater choices of cars, longer open hours, and such at Bordeaux vs. the smaller Brive. But I enjoy driving, and I haven't been far west of Beynac so I'm curious about that drive. Your preferences and curiosities may differ.

Anyway, those would be my own tiebreakers, you may have others. We thought Beynac was a good choice for a base, hope you do too.

For the small roads in the Dordogne I wouldn't rent anything bigger than Economy class car. This size should be fine if there are just 2 of you.

I almost got stuck once when the little road I was on got narrower, and narrower and I was surrounded on both sides by stone walls. In a larger car I would have been totally screwed.
