Any advice on day trips to Reims/Epernay from Paris? I've found lots of tours online, but they all seem fairly basic. My group has some expertise and would appreciate a more in-depth visit - to growers/small producers rather than the big houses. Any suggestions?

Can't help you on visits to growers.
But to sip a variety of different Champagnes from the smaller producers, you may want to stop by the wine bar C Comme Champagne in Epernay.
I'd recommend staying overnight at Hotel Jean Moet in Epernay, because a day trip is likely to give your group too little time, since you're looking for a more in-depth experience.
