Paris to Amboise by train

Greetings fellow travelers. This has been a trickier question that I thought.

We are starting in Paris at the first of May and flying out of Bordeaux 16 days later.
I thought it would be nice to stop for a few days in the Loire region.
However train routes are baffling.
Are there direct trains from Paris to Amboise? ( other than first thing in morning and at night)
Or must one change trains?
And is the train station a mile from the old town section we are staying?

For bonus points, is there an alternative city that is on the main route from Paris to Bordeaux?

What you see on www.sncf-connect.com is what there is. So if that site tells you that most of the time you will change trains, then it is like that. Nobody will be able to tell you something differently.

Now, changing trains is a normal and expected feature of train travel. Don't fret over it.

As to where the station is in relation to the town: That is where maps are for. Have a look a for example the excellent maps.google.com

You can get a TGV (high speed) train from Paris to St Pierre des Corps (1 hour), which is just outside Tours, and then switch to a regional train to Amboise (45 mins). The station is a bit of a healthy walk to the old town. It might be easier to stay in Tours, which I thought was a very nice town and has easy connections to Chateau de Chenonceau. There is a very short one-stop train that takes you from the TGV station to the main centrally-located station in Tours.

We took a train from Paris to Saint Peirre des Corps and then rented a car there to tour the area. It gave us so much flexibility on timing and which chateaus to visit. We thought having the car was really beneficial.
