Should we buy reserved ticked to Eiffel Tower and Versailles one moth before going in November 20th. I ask cause I don't know how busy Paris will be during these months and since my itinerary is not set in stone, want to make sure we see these 2 sights for sure. Thank you. Love this site. Always very helpful.
Get the Eiffel Tower tickets on-line now. I see only one time slot available at 8 pm on Nov 20.
No point in Versailles advance tickets that I can think of. Go when you have time. If you get the Museum Pass, you can skip the ticket line (but not the security line).
Thank you Sam. What site are you using. Too many when I google Eiffel Tower.
Here is the official site: http://www.toureiffel.paris/en/preparing-your-visit/buying-your-tickets.html
Thank you Sam. Just bought our tickets.
the drawback of Eiffel tickets in advance which we just experienced is that you are stuck with the weather you get. We had tickets for Oct 5 -- and virtually the only day since we got to Paris where it poured all day was Oct 5. There were no lines at the tower as we visited it in the rain -- still worth doing but sure would have been nice another day.
Versailles? We just went for the fountains last Sunday. The lines to get into the Chateau were hundreds of people long. If you decide to go to Versailles, pick up tickets ahead BUT also get there at least half an hour before the gates open to lessen the time you spend in the security line. We loved the fountains and there was no line for the garden this time of year -- but we would never have attempted the Chateau without getting there very very early.
I just returned from Paris this past weekend. We bought the museum pass which I highly recommend if you plan on seeing a few sites. We did not book any advance tickets for the Eiffel tower since we were there a week and as mentioned previously we did not want to get stuck with bad weather. The tower opens at 9:30 AM. We checked the local weather online and picked the clearest day to go (it was rainy and foggy the last couple of days we were in Paris...plus cold). We arrived a bit before 9:00 AM and stood in line. I went to the top, my husband only went to the 2nd floor (he does not like heights). It was wonderful. I was on the top for maybe 15 - 20 min. until it started getting to crowded and then I went down and met my husband. Doing this we were able to pick the clearest/sunniest day to go. We stayed about 5 minutes walk from the tower so we saw it a lot from the ground. The weekends were very crowed and I did notice a couple of times the lines were shorter than others...when I say shorter I don't mean short. Regarding Versailles, again we got there early and stood in line before it opened (maybe 20 min early this time). The day we went it was cold and there was a bit of a drizzle. We were the 2nd and 3rd person in and we toured the place in a little over an hour....no problem with crowds. We stayed and did the grounds, etc. We left around 2 PM or so and counted roughly 20 tour buses there. We talked to people that had gone on Sunday and Tuesday (the two worst days per Rick Steves) and they said it was crazy crowded. We went on a Thursday based on Rick Steves advice. We were in Paris 10/10 - 10/17 and I was a bit surprised how crowded it was...take Ricks advice on crowd control.
Just another FYI, the fountains at Versailles only operate on certain days. If this is important to you check online for when they operate. They were not operating on the day (Thursday) we went.
Thanks Janet and Karen for your info. I had already bought the tickets prior to your responses but it was the only day with a 12:30 opening so i took it. We will be in Paris from Nov. 23 - 29 and I'm sure it will rain but we don't care. First time back in Europe after 35 years so bringing our daughter with us and she is so excited. I love this site and soon will be able to answer questions like you hopefully. Thanks alot.
Something I did at Versailles, I got there about 45min. before they opened, was the 5th person in line. Once going through security I headed out across the compound to the other building and followed the signs to the Hall of Mirrors. When I got there it was only myself, a lady that followed me and the two security guards. We both got pictures of the Hall of Mirrors with no one else in the shot & took pictures of each other, then headed back to the entrance and continued with the tour. By time I got back to the Hall, it was full of people.
Enjoy your trip.
It's good you were able to get your Eiffel tickets. I didn't get any prior to our trip there in Sept. However, our first night in Paris we walked to the tower and found that the line to go up was quite short. We waited about 20 minutes and went up. It was about 9pm.
Also, I highly recommend the 7 euro tour for Versailles. You won't wait in any lines. They will tell you where to go (to the stairs off to the right). You'll wait briefly in a comfortable waiting area for your tour to assemble, get an earpiece so that you can hear your guide, and take a 90 min. behind the scenes tour which includes the opera house. Afterward you can wonder through the palace or gardens at leisure. I'm so glad we had the tour. We bought tickets in advance from the Versailles Palace website for 9:30am. We took an early train (7am ish) from Paris and had time to sit at Starbuck's in Versailles for a few minutes before walking to the palace.
Thank you everyone for all your great advice.
