Visiting Versailles? RER C train line closures, July 16-August 27

Hello fellow travelers,

A recent post prompted me to do a bit of research on this issue... Thanks Kim! (from Paris)!

This information may be useful especially if you're planning to visit the Château de Versailles, during your Paris visit this summer.

According to the Château de Versailles official website: http://en.chateauversailles.fr/prepare-my-visit-/single/access

From 16 July to 27 August, the RER C line is closed between Paris Austerlitz and Javel. You can go to Javel thanks to:

the metro 10 from Paris Austerlitz and Saint-Michel Notre Dame
(station Cluny – La Sorbonne),
the replacement buses from Invalides, Pont de l’Alma and Champ de Mars Tour Eiffel.

However, we advise you to use the SNCF trains from the Saint-Lazare
and Montparnasse train stations.

So what does this mean?

If you want to travel on the RER C from Paris to the Palace of Versailles,
you will have to get to the Javel station via Métro line 10 (yellow) or via bus.

See map here to see closures: http://travaux-ete-rera.ratp.fr/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/schema-fermeture-rer_C-1600x600pixels_160408-2.jpg

As stated above, you may also travel via SNCF trains, but the RER C is more direct & faster, as far as I understand.

Wishing you all safe & happy travels!

Exactly you have to get around the central part of the C line to get to Javel (which is by the way a lovely old art deco station near the Seine) from where you can proceed to Versailles Chateau Rive Gauche your destination. There are many ways to get there.

I just found more information, however I could only found it in French, & my French is a bit rusty!

According to this website: http://travauxrerc.transilien.com/solutions-substitution.html

Translation, with help from google translate :-)

To assist you during the closures of the RER C, STIF, RATP and SNCF have reinforced the metro 10 line and bus 63.
A special shuttle bus will run between Javel (station) and Invalides (station) and will allow convenient access to the tourist sites of the Hotel Invalides, the Eiffel Tower and the Musée du Quai Branly. Signage are in place at the station to help you reach the transport substitutions and thus you can continue on your journey.

The special RER C shuttle bus' schedule:

de 05h à 09h ( from 5am to 9am); 1 bus / 20 minutes ( 1 bus every 20 minutes)

de 09h à 20h ( from 9am to 8pm); 1 bus / 10 minutes

de 20h à 00h ( from 8pm to midnight); 1 bus / 20 minutes

As stated above, you may also travel via SNCF trains, but the RER C is more direct & faster, as far as I understand.

Both SNCF trains are direct and the one to Chantiers Station in Versailles is pretty quick and direct. The one to Rive Droite is direct but takes a bit longer. However, depending on one's origination point in Paris, it may be much faster to go to St. Lazare or Montparnasse than make your way to the Javel Metro.

The Chantiers Station in Versailles is about an extra 5 minute walk from the RER C station. The Rive Droite Station is about the same distance and is very accessible to the Queens Gate (a good idea if one is finishing their visit at the Trianons or Hamlet).

Douglas,

Thanks for making such a great point regarding the SNCF trains!

I actually checked google maps, & thought about amending my original post, so thank you for clarifying the information about the trains!

I also think this makes perfect sense:

However, depending on one's origination point in Paris, it may be much faster to go to St. Lazare or Montparnasse than make your way to the Javel Metro.

EDIT: I forgot to add this information.........

I used the "planned a trip" from the RTP site and it showed that I should take a bus, a metro and RER C. My question is where do I purchase the more expensive ticket to Versailles? Thanks!

Jess,

You can buy the RER tickets at Metro/RER stations.

If you will be in Paris for longer than 4-5 days, you may consider buying the Navigo Decouverte Weekly Pass
which will give you unlimited travel on Metro, buses & RER trains for only €22,15pp.

You may want to check
