Paris restaurant recos for 50th birthday

Hi Rick, hi everyone. I’m taking my wife (and our two daughters) to Paris for her 50th birthday and would love your restaurant recommendations for a suitable 50th celebration. Thank you in advance!

I think you should choose a restaurant that you all will enjoy for her 50th birthday.

I don't want to speak for everyone but I'm going to recommend that you pick a restaurant that has the kind of cuisine that you and your wife and daughters prefer and an atmosphere that you all enjoy and where the pricing is within your budget for a suitable 50th celebration.

We have celebrated our anniversary and my birthday at this restaurant (eaten there several times). L'Initial in the 5th . A classic multi course meal: little tidbits when you sit down, an amuse, an appetizer, a fish course, a choice of one of 3 meat courses, a sorbet, a dessert -- and mignardises at the end to go with coffee if you order it. we usually get a glass of champagne or if we are with another couple we get a bottle of winer.

The menu costs about 60 Euro. Courses are small but exquisite and of course with so many you are well fed. You can get a cheese court extra, but we never room for that. It is incredibly good value.

We have also had a lovely meal at Correta, a newish restaurant at the edge of MLK park in Batignolles. More typical 3 course dinner-- modern like being in a treehouse.

La Tour d’Argent is very special, very memorable with excellent food. Lunch is less expensive than dinner. The dining room is floor to ceiling windows overlooking the Seine River and Notre Dame.

They also just opened a new restaurant on the Eiffel Tower that looks very good called Madame Brasserie.

Google for info on both.

La Tour d’Argent is very special, but it is also very closed. Maybe next year.

You have not given us much guidance to suggest appropriate locations, but I’ll just take a stab and suggest les Ombres, with breathtaking views of the Eiffel Tower and wonderful food:

It would help to know where you intend to stay: Paris has many excellent restaurants and going halfway across the city is rarely worth the effort for somebody who is just spending a few days in town, unless you want to try a very specific cuisine!
An idea of budget per head would also help.

Pottoka, mentioned above, is a very good tip, by the way - especially if you are staying in the rue Cler area (7th arrondissement).

Les Ombres has a lovely modern room and wonderful views on to the Seine and up to the Eiffel Tower through its glass roof. I have only eaten there once and did not think the food was memorable. Not bad, but not terrific either.

WE had an anniversary lunch at La Tour d'Argent with a lovely view - alas the fire took care of their Notre Dame view at the moment. It is a traditional multi course meal rather than a tasting menu and rather heavy. Also excellent and also more expensive even at lunch than l'Initial by a lot. Didn't realize it was closed, but one of its draws was the stunning view of Notre Dame so I imagine that has hurt. I think they actually paid some of the bill for the illumination of the Cathedral at night.

L'Initial is terrific value; the room is very plain -- service lovely, only a few tables and simple white room. Food just excellent.

This year we will celebrate our 50th at the new restaurant Eclipses which is run by the former chef at an old favorite of ours Le Cottage Marcadet which has been closed for a number of years. WE loved that restaurant and are hoping the new one will be amazing as well. The 5 course meal is about 80 Euro.

Janettravels has been one of my go-to experts for restaurants for years. Tocard often offers a good list, too, and obviously up-to-date info.

I'll add that L'Initial has a lunch service. Since we aren't large evening eaters, we opt for the lunch service which offers both the full menu and the same menu but with fewer courses. You didn't say what ages your daughters are and how long they will want to stay at a table.
