I am going to Paris next year and this new combo pass was recommended to me. But I have also heard second hand that there may be problems with it. Does anyone have experience with this pass? If so, how does it compare to getting a transit pass and a museum pass separately?
OK, I'm seeing the price of a 5-day Passlib as 155 EUR and it includes a 5-day zone 1-3 Visite transport pass and a 4-day Museum Pass. Separately these are 38.35 EUR and 62 EUR. So the question is are the other offers worth 55 EUR. There is also a less expensive transport card if you go for a calendar week (like Monday to Friday, or Tuesday to Saturday) called a Navigo Decouverte for 22.80 EUR plus 5 EUR set up.
Thanks. It also includes an all day sightseeing bus tour and a boat trip on the Seine.. The second hand reports I have heard are that there are some problems such as the card stopped working after a couple of days; that the long security lines to get into the museums made the museum admission less useful due to time constraints (which would also apply to the museum pass); and that it was necessary to remember to get a bus transfer from the conductor if you were going to get off one bus and on to another - otherwise the bus part wouldn't work any more (not sure the details on this one). All these could equally apply to other types of passes. Perhaps I should have asked a more general question about usefulness of passes in Paris. I have used the Oyster Card in London and it was great; I have used the Swiss rail pass in Switzerland which gives free access to museums as well, and that has worked beautifully. So my experience elsewhere has been very good. Does any one have first hand experience with these passes in Paris?
First hand experiences with both the Navigo Decouverte and the Visite is that there are none. Its a pass. Transfers are a non issue. A pass means no "transfer" required.
There is no way around security lines. The Museum Pass lets you bypass the ticket window, and its a the same pass, whether you buy it through Passlib or at a tourist desk at the airport.
Plus, the Navigo Decouverte is for zones 1 to 5 including CDG airport, Versailles and Disneyland, more than the zone 1-3 Visite.
Thanks so much for the advice. Sounds like the Navigo Decouverte and separate Museum Pass is the way to go!
there are separate security lines for passholders at most museums and this often saves a great deal of time; this is particularly true at the Musee d'Orsay or Orangerie and might be true at the Louvre although we have found the Carrousel entrance a better bet than the Pyramid passholder security line. As others have noted, the Paris Visite is a poor bargain for transport and even less so when included in a commercial package like the 'passes' discussed here. And the Museum Pass you get with these packages is the exact same pass you get on your own. It just costs more.
If a Visite pass stops working before it expires, it has probably become demagnetized which happens easily. You can get it replaced if that happens.
