Paris over Labor Day weekend

Hello! My fiance and I will be honeymooning in Europe from Sept 1 - Sept 17 and our Paris duration happens to be right over labor day weekend (Friday - Tuesday). I'm wondering if the crowds will be larger than normal and if the American holiday affects the tourism in Paris. Do you think we will experience longer wait times at the major spots - Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Versailles? How would you suggest getting around this??

I would suggest you don't have to worry about getting around it. First of all, how many Americans do you think will use that long weekend to go to Paris? Secondly, Americans are not the only tourists in Paris, no matter what the day. People from other European countries are there in droves all the time and the N American labour day holiday means nothing to them. What you can worry about is that September is a very busy month in Paris, what with fashion shows, etc. so you had best reserve entry to the places high on your list of " need to see", as well as hotel if you haven't already booked.

Happy Honeymoon! Ours was in September, too, with a couple of days in Paris and the rest in the Champagne region to the east. You may be completely aware of this, but for what it's worth, Paris and much of Europe consider May 1 to be "Labor Day," while it's "May Day" to us Americans. You'd likely encounter workers' marches or parades if you were there 4 1/2 months earlier.

Don't take the second half of Norma's answer lightly.

September is often the busiest one of the year in Paris.

Thank you everyone for the tips! In fact our hotel is already booked and I'll be setting my alarm for 1:30AM (early tomorrow morning) to get online and book our tickets to the eiffel tower!

Thanks again :)

Good luck, Andrea, and don't get too upset if the places you want to reserve are all booked up. There is the whole of Paris to enjoy and here on this forum are plenty of people to offer suggestions.

I am wondering what else Norma believes is good to book in advance?

We will also be there that weekend. We were able to get Eiffel tower tickets though I forgot to set an alarm and grabbed a less than ideal time for us but they still work. Other than that, no other plans for timed tickets while in Paris.

Lauren, unless you're using the Paris Museum Pass, I'd pre-purchase tickets to the Louvre and D'Orsay if those two museums are on your list. They are not "timed" tickets for a particular day/hour but allow you to skip long ticket lines. You can do that through the online sources listed on their individual websites. You may also go to one of the FNAC outlets in Paris and purchase them there - which is probably how I'd do it.

If you intend to visit a lot of the museums and other top sites in Paris, I'll heartily recommend the Paris Museum Pass if the math works for you. This was probably the best pass we've ever purchased, and the math hardly EVER works for us! It doesn't cover the Eiffel, and you still have to stand in some security check lines (no way around those) but you skip the ticket lines and can go back to your favorites as many times as you wish to during the life of the pass. We used ours to pop into the Louvre again for an hour or two on several evenings when it was open late. It may also be purchased online or once you arrive in Paris:

Kathy - I do plan to purchase the museum pass, thanks! :) that isn't something I need to buy in advance though so I wanted to be sure there wasn't anything else I am missing besides the EIffel tower tickets (though today I bought the Monet's gardens tickets just in case).
