Paris + outside Paris ideas

We just booked our stay for an April '25 trip for my husband, myself and our two teens (15 & 13). We we're hoping to stay 8-9 nights but were only able to snag the apartment for a 7-night stay. This has us looking at a 1–2-night excursion outside of Paris right before flying home.

Already planning a day at Versailles so considering Giverny or elsewhere (besides Normandy). Suggestions?

The idea of staying in a chateau or quaint B&B is appealing.
We weren't originally planning to rent a car but would reconsider if necessary.

This is our "once in a lifetime" trip so we're trying to squeeze all the loveliness out of it as possible!

Colmar w/a day trip via bus or taxi to Riquewihr, Eguisheim & or Kaysersberg. Half-timbered medieval towns.

pmwbforster,
Colmar is a good suggestion. TGV to Strasbourg, half-hour from there to Colmar. I don't know about a chateau for lodging, but quaint B&Bs are probable. It is a charming city and there are lots of options to visit nearby small towns and villages. Do a search here on the forum for Colmar hints/ideas/suggestions. And easy return to Paris and/or CDG from Strasbourg.

The thing I thought of when reading “before flying home” is how much an outside of Paris trip might complicate my return. Just something to consider if only for 2 days - the travel time there, the logistics of getting back to CDG (I am assuming) factoring into your timing and whether you’d have enough time to make a jaunt worth it. Of course only you can decide :-)

This thread may be of help: https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g187070-i12-k13718161-Small_town_or_Inn_near_CDG_for_night_before_flight_out-France.html

I might suggest that you simply switch lodging for the last couple days in Paris and do a day trip somewhere if you feel you’ve h run out of things to do in Paris. If you’ve never been to Paris, this is unlikely - there’s enough to do for several trips!

Whatever you decide - have a great time!!

I don’t know how much the teenagers would enjoy Colmar. It’s pretty, and it’s very different from Paris, but there’s not much of interest to teens. OTOH, you haven’t indicated what is of interest to your teens.
Giverny works if you plan to visit the Orangerie. When we visited, there was a combined ticket. I’m not sure there is much in the way of accommodation there, though. Finally, Giverny is an easy day trip by train and bus from Paris.
I tend to agree with the other commenter who suggested moving within Paris.
I would also suggest searching this site and the wider web for “chateau stay” and see if that gives you any ideas.

As BJL alluded to, a lot of savvy travelers would say they’d never return to their departure city on the day of an international flight. Too many things can go wrong, making you miss your flight home.
