Paris on May 1 (Labor Day)

Suggestions of what to do in Paris on May 1, since so much will be closed? April 30 will be our first day in the city, and I was planning to take it easy to help get over jet lag but maybe we need to hit the ground running to account for May 1.

It is a good day for picnics in parks and gardens (bakeries will be open to grab sandwiches and drinks and dessert). Or if brave you could watch the big labor union march which usually begins from Republic. We have found it very interestng but the Black Block anarchists will always be there to stir up trouble by molotov cocktialing a McDonalds or whatever and we did get caught in the tear gas one year. so you do need to pay attention and steer clear of the guys in black balaclavas.

Maybe wander around Montmartre and visit Sacre Couer. Take in the views; and meander. I'm guessing some food establishments may be open up there.

Or visit Jardin des Plantes or just meander through the Tuilleries.
