Paris - Nice, best base in between?

We have 9 days to travel by car from Paris to Nice.
We are considering basing ourselves somewhere in between and doing day trips from there.
Any suggestions as to where? Loire Valley perhaps?
Thanks

Via Michelin shows that the shortest driving route from Paris to Nice takes 9 hours without stops and covers about 560 miles. If you opt for a single base along the way, you will be quite limited in terms of how much ground you can comfortably cover on day-trips. Provence is an area where you might be able to find enough things to do to fill that time, but if I were heading straight to Provence, I'd take the train and rent a car when I arrived there.

Do you have enough time allotted to the area around Nice, in addition to your nine re-positioning days? There are lots of nice places on and near the Riviera as well. Many can be reached by public transportation, but others benefit from having a car available. The area around Gorges du Verdon and Moustiers-Ste-Marie is one area that's basically impossible without a car.
