I understand I need a 3cm x 2.5cm photo of my face to get the Navigo Decouverte. I'm not seeing any indication if that can be a selfie that I print out on regular paper and bring from home, a passport type of photo, in color, or if I should hope the photo booth is working at CDG when I arrive, (jet-lagged and on my own) and pay the 5€ and buy it there. Parisbytrain site has been helpful, but not finding any further specifics. Any advice on this? Thanks!
I just scanned the photo from my passport and decreased its size just a bit before printing on regular paper. Any photo will do as long as the size is correct.
For my daughter’s pass, I found an old photo and cut out the correct size which included her face and shoulders.
Enjoy your trip!
These are the photo requirements:
1.3. Pour être valable, le titulaire doit inscrire ses nom et prénom, coller sa photo (de face, tête nue, fond neutre, non utilisée, non scannée, non photocopiée) et apposer le rabat autocollant sur la Carte Nominative Transport.

For the Navigo Découverte card, to be valid, the holder must print his last/first name, attach a new facial photo (no hats/scarves, neutral background, not scanned, not photocopied).
You generally assemble the card yourself. I have used heads clipped from snapshots and photos printed off my computer on regular computer paper. I don't doubt that a scanned photo that is clear would be fine. I imagine the concern about a scanned photo is its clarity. Yes, a particularly anal clerk might object, but I have not yet heard of it happening. And in the amazing event of it occurring you could use a photo booth.
It needs to be a clear frontal face shot of the correct size.
According to those requirements, a photo from your phone that is printed at home would be okay. It doesn't say it has to be glossy.
THANK YOU everyone for your replies! So helpful. Bon voyage :-)
We have had hotel personnel suggest we use our iPhone to take a photo of our passport and then print it and use is as a Navigo photo, but we used photos printed from our computer 3 different times over 5 years and never had any one ask to inspect them. I don't think the photo quality is that critical as long as they are the correct side to fit the card. I find the Navigo cards are a much better option as compared to tickets as you just swipe them getting continually on Metro trains, RER trains, busses, and even the vernacular. Many Paris residents appear to have some kind of Metro card.

Those living in the Île de France may apply online for a Navigo card (not a Navigo Découverte) which is free. When one's bank information is added the card becomes a carte Liberté which can serve as both a ND and a Navigo Easy card, with one's monthly usage being automatically deducted at the end of the month.
Otherwise, tourists have access to the same public transportation services, at the same cost structure, as do residents.
