As I look closer at transportation around Paris I seem to get more and more confused. I'm trying to figure out the most efficient way to get from arrondissement 15, in the area of tramway 3a Georges Brassens stop or metro 12 Convention stop to Gare de Lyon. While the public transportation system in Paris seems amazing and thorough, on a map it's starting to look like a bowl of colored spaghetti to me. Can anyone help me identify the most efficient way to get from Point A to Point B? Thank you!
Just us google maps. It can plan trips in Paris using public transit.
Note that in Paris you have tickets for Metro/RER and tickets for Tram/Bus. All permit free transfers, but only within their own category, so if you take a route that includes both metro and bus or tram than you would need a ticket for each. If you take an all metro route you would not have that issue.
You can also use the "Ile De France Mobilités" app, which you can also use to buy tickets.
Trying to figure out routes on a map is so last century...
Unfortunately, they no longer publish the Metro Geographic map, but I saved an old one. Maps are so last century, but I like to see where I am going geographically. My Metro Geo map clearly shows the best Metro route as going from Convention to Madeleine on the No 12, then changing to the No 14 to Gare de Lyon.
For accurate transportation information and planning, use any one of these apps:
- Ile de France Mobilités
- Bonjour RATP
- Citymapper
Googlemaps gives the most convoluted and inaccurate information imaginable and should not be used for métro/RER/bus planning.
From Convention, one easy way to reach Gare de Lyon would be to take métro 12 to Concorde and connect to métro 1 to Gare de Lyon. A faster option would be to take métro 12 to Montparnasse - Bienvenüe, change to métro 4 to Châtelet, connect to métro 14 to Gare de Lyon. Either way, the ticket is 2.50€.
www.metromap.fr/en is an easy to read map
But it depends when you are planning to make the trip.
Right now through August 7, there is no service on Line 12 south of Montparnasse. (Which means there is no taking the metro line 12 from Convention to Montparnasse.)
If your trip is August 8 or later, then those journey options including Line 12 to Montparnasse are great options.
One problem with an old printed map is that it won't show, for example, Tramway 3a or 3b, or any of several others that have come on line in the past few years.
I also recommend CityMapper. It also tells you about temporary closures, like the current one on a portion of the line 12.
Thank you everyone for the helpful input. My trip is in October. I typically look at various online maps along my travel route at least enough to make sure what I want to do and where I want to go is realistic. I know I can get from point A to point B, but I couldn’t sort out what would be the most efficient route, so your advice is appreciated.
So for October those routes that Tocard recommended are perfect !
One more vote for CityMapper. I used it Paris for the first time this year and without their curly-q walking detailed instructions I never would have found the RER station hidden under the Pont Alexandre III. Even the door into the station is almost without signage and I never would have found it because as you stand on the bridge a flat map says you're there.
It also gives you advanced instructions like which entry to the metro is closest and which car is best. Since I'm not familiar with all the stations these were relatively lost on me but I can see how it could really help if you know the metro stations.
Enjoy Paris,

From Convention, one easy way to reach Gare de Lyon would be to take métro 12 to Concorde and connect to métro 1 to Gare de Lyon.
I would go one more stop on the 12 to Madeleine and get the 14. The No 14 is an express line with only 2 stops between there and Gare de Lyon, and because it is deep underground, all the stations have escalators and elevators. But it hard to argue with Tocard despite his claim to be located in Panguitch, Utah. He is actually in France.
