Does the Paris Metro have a contactless payment system like the London underground? If so, can I use a credit card and/or iPhone/Apple Pay? If not, can I use Apple Pay to buy regular paper tickets?
when I bought tickets in December, it was not yet contactless at the vending machine. I also expected to need a PIN but the machine relented. larger stations and train stations will have people at ticket windows.
The machines for drinks in the metro require contactless cards, but the machines to recharge the Navigo or sell tickets don't yet. We used our US credit cards -- they ask for a pin but if you wait they just proceed. We charged our NDs for the month with cards on the machine -- so the Euro limit for no pin is at least 75 Euro.
Thanks for the quick replies!
I think the OP meant, do the turnstiles themselves accept a contactless card or Iphone, maybe with an implied daily-cap, like the London Underground. Even NY City is implementing this, although I think it's a Weekly cap, not daily, because they eliminated the Daily (physical, bought for cash) Metrocard.
I haven't been to Paris recently enough to answer.
Yes, that's exactly what I meant. Thanks for a clearer way of asking my question!
I’m in Paris now and the answer to your question is no, you can’t use your card at the turnstile. If you tell us how long you will be there and what days of the week we can help advise which option is best for you. You can get individual tickets, carnets of 10 tickets, daily passes, a weekly pass that’s good for Monday-Friday, etc.
I think Andrea meant a weekly pass that’s good for Mon-Sun.
Lucky you! I hope Paris is treating you well. We'll be there a Tuesday through Friday. We'll be staying in the 6th and, since it's the last few days of a month-long trip, we're probably going to be sticking close to "home." We won't need anything outside of zone 1.
Interesting, the Metro in Lyon has contactless payment on their turnstiles. I just assumed the Paris system was also upgraded as it’s the same equipment.
Susan is right, I meant Monday-Sunday. Thanks for catching that Susan. Lack of sleep apparently made me not pay close enough attention to what I was typing. I even planned my trip to arrive and depart on Sundays, knowing I wouldn’t need to use public transportation on our arrival day.
Looking at the Lyon Metro, https://www.tcl.fr/en/fares, it does not look a whole lot different than the Paris system, with individual tickets, carnets books of 10 tickets, day tickets, multi day tickets, and weekly tickets that can be loaded loaded with a credit card and are contactless, just like the Paris Navigo cards.
