Paris metro and eSIM question

Hello!
I was just wondering if anyone had any advice as far as getting the airolo app to use while we are in France? I didn’t know if it’s a better deal to just get more data on our US phone plan or use that app as an eSIM option. I want to be able to use our phones and download things while we are there on the road.

My second question is if there is a good app to get the Paris Metro maps on, or should we just use paper maps to get ourselves around?

Thank you in advance for any advice!

Abby

I like the CityMapper app for Paris and for my Metro usage. There is also the RATP app (the company that runs the Metro) but I have had better luck with CityMapper.

google maps is actually not bad for Paris either -- it is terrible in smaller towns, but fairly accurate for Paris.

Another vote for CityMapper - from a Paris résident.

There was a really thorough and helpful thread a year or two ago about Airalo (note spelling) if you are able to find it with the search function.

I was just watching a vlog on this and they said they use both Citymapper and Google maps because neither one is perfect. There are also the "official" French apps for the metro.

You should always have a "paper" map in your pocket for backup, I've been using and recommending Streetwise forever. I should ask for a sponsorship deal! The pullout maps in Rick's guides are pretty good too.

Thank you for the advice everyone! I appreciate the information on the Metro app, and I will look up that older thread on the airlalo app.

There are three apps which work well when using public transportation in Paris:

  • Bonjour RATP
  • Ile de France Mobilités
  • Citymapper

I recommend Citymapper as it can be used in many cities, not just Paris. The other two are unique to the Ile de France.

Gogglemaps is fine for walking around Paris, but the public transportation information it provides is awkward and incomplete.

Hi!

I’ve been using “Saily” for an ESIM for the last 2 months, it’s cheap, works wonderfully, and covers all of the countries.

If you’re wondering about metro tickets - IDF mobilities is a fluke, it works sometimes and not others. I have 2 tickets that I wasn’t able to use for the two weeks I was there, and had to continually buy tickets at each metro stop. I suggest that route. Get a Navigo card and load it up.

Have fun!!
