Paris,Lourdes, Lisbon, Fatima - March 2025

We are planning a trip to Paris, Lourdes, Lisbon and Fatima in March 2025. The only requirement for this trip March 25 is our day in Lourdes. I have 2 full weeks for this trip. My initial idea is 3 full days in Paris. Min 1 night in Lourdes, just need to be there on the morning of March 25th for the day. 2-3 full days is Lisbon. 1 full day in Fatima and either stay in Fatima for a night or drive back to Lisbon. My last part is whether to fly in and out of Paris or one way to Paris and back home from Lisbon.

How do I put this together so that we can get the most out of our travel days. Between Paris to Lourdes then to Portugal for Lisbon and Fatima.

From what I’ve read a full day is all we need to Lourdes. I’m trying to decide, train, plane or automobile from Paris to Lourdes. Once we are in Lourdes do we go back to Paris or should we proceed on to Lisbon.

Once we get to Lisbon, 4 full days there with one day as an excursion to Fatima. I think we may hire a private tour driver for our trip to Fatima.

So any suggestions?

From Lourdes, you can head back to Bordeaux or Toulouse to fly to Lisbon. The flights might not be daily, so check carefully. You might also need to spend the night in Bordeaux or Toulouse - both are very good cities to visit, so it is worth it anyway!
You might need 2 nights in Lourdes, because it is far from Paris (you might not get there early) and not that close to Bordeaux and Toulouse either.
The simplest way from Paris to Lourdes is the train, taking a bit less than 5 hours. However, Volotea flies there from Orly, and this would get you to Lourdes before lunch, meaning that 1 night would be enough indeed.

Lisbon is also quite "far", and can have flights booked up for cruise ship departures. You might find it necessary, if much slower, to fly to Madrid to fly home. I'm not urging that, just warning you to consider a lot of options. Partner airlines with your transatlantic carrier can sometimes work out well.

Because your trip prioritizes two distant landmarks, you may need to reconcile yourself to some less satisfying travel days. After looking at Rick's country-train maps, https://www.ricksteves.com/travel-tips/transportation/trains , you might select less famous places to stop over. Just an idea.

It would have been helpful to know if you have been to Paris or Europe before, and your age and mobility, Is March 25 going to be a high-demand, high-cost festival day of some kind? That would run cost up and availability down.

Today, is unusual for a Multi-City/Open-Jaw ticket to cost much more than a single-city Round-Trip.

25 March we know is The Feast of the Annunciation, hence the need to be in Lourdes that day.

There are through TGV trains from Paris Montparnasse to Lourdes at 1004, arrive 1455, 1400 arrive 1853 and 1804 arrive 2256.

There is even a night train from Paris Austerlitz at 2212, arrive 0919.

They should be bookable around the turn of the year.

On both 25 and 26 March Easyjet have Bordeaux to Lisbon flights at 1505 (25 March), 1500 (26 March) arriving Lisbon at 1605 and 1555 respectively for £35.17 before baggage and seat selection fees.

You could go to Bordeaux late afternoon 25 March, or there is an early TGV at 0702, arrive Bordeaux St Jean at 0940.

Thank you for all of your great ideas. Yes March 25 is the Annunciation and it's my 60th Birthday. My husband and I are in good shape and can handle the Trains, Planes and Automobile. I'm looking at the early afternoon direct train to Lourdes from Paris getting into Lourdes around 7PM on the 24th. I don't want to hurry our day in Lourdes so I'm torn between taking the 6PM train to Toulouse on the 25th and then there is an Air Portugal flight on the 26th at 11am non stop to Lisbon for $67 or take a chance and take the 6:05am train on the 26th and it arrives in Toulouse at 9am. Just so unsure what is the best option as both Easyjet and TAP have really bad reviews. Will we get to Lisbon... hehehe. What are your thoughts of Easyjet and TAP and what is your experience with the train schedule staying on time. I've traveled Italy and I know that at any time they can go on strike.

Thank you!

Don't take the train from Lourdes in the morning before your flight, it is risky in case of train delays. The train at 6 PM is a better choice.
TAP Air Portugal is really OK in my experience. Just make sure you follow their rules on luggage (the hand luggage allowance is very low).

Speaking personally I would, spiritually, really want to stay for the Torchlight Procession on 25 March. Especially after such a long journey to get there and on such an important date in the ecclesiastical calendar.

Thus that means travelling on the morning of 26 March.

While French trains are good, the train to Toulouse gets you to the airport 90 minutes before the flight- that is, arguably, too tight anyway. But it leaves little or no leeway for even the most minor train delay for any reason whatsoever. Things happen, IMO there is no buffer in that plan.

Therefore, if I was in your shoes I would head for Bordeaux, and use the 3 hour or so buffer to good advantage- maybe an early birthday lunch or just a bit of sightseeing.

I've only ever personally flown TAP once, long haul from Macau. I flew Cathay, Air France and TAP on different dates to and from HK/Macau (on expenses). For me I would rank them in order as Cathay (by a country mile), TAP then Air France. But one flight is not representative. I may just have been lucky, they may have got worse for all I know.
I will freely admit that on one Cathay flight I got bumped up from coach to 1st class. The only time I have ever flown 1st. So that biases me!
If I had the TAP/Easyjet choice I would do Easyjet because I know precisely what I am getting.

YMMV.
