Paris Lodging (3) for 2 day layover...

Jan. 4th, my son is starting a semester abroad (based in Florence) and with the airfares so much cheaper into Paris, he is starting with a 2 day/2 night "layover" in Paris. He and 2 friends are flying into (and out of) ORY. I think it best for them to base those two days closer to the city sites and take uber in (and back out) from the airport. While they will be staying in hostels much of their time traveling Europe (later), I want them to start (and store their luggage) in a "safe" convenient hotel (for 3). They won't be using the room for much more than catching some zzz's.

I hope that is enough information to get a good recommendation or two so we can setup/finalize ASAP.

Thank you,
Mike

Can't recommend anyplace based on personal experience, but have you tried searching on booking.com within a radius of Orly Airport? From what you say, sounds like you don't want a hotel right near the airport, but it would be good to stay on the southern/southwestern side of Paris, so this would be the 13th, 14th, 15th arondissements.

I suggest overlaying the hotel map with a map of the Metro and any top-priority Paris sights your son and his friends particularly want to see.

I'd suggest using booking.com to search for a hotel. A "family room" will be the cheapest option for three people, but they may need two rooms instead. Look for a place near a Metro station, preferably where two lines cross. I'd suggest the 5th arrondissement (Latin Quarter) where there will be lots of students, or the 13th just to the south. You can filter by location, price range, and other variables. Pick a few candidates and then use the hotels' own websites to contact them directly for a reservation. You can the "street view" feature on Google Earth to eyeball the hotels and neighborhoods, and connect to their websites.

Better still, have your son and/or his friends do this search. They'll need this kind of travel skill in the next semester and beyond, might as well start now.

An ordinary taxi, whoever is first in the official line at the airport, should be just as good as Uber. There are cheaper ways to get into the city but for three people with luggage, who haven't used the transit system, a taxi would make more sense. But after a couple of days in the city they might be able to take the RER commuter rail back to Orly for the departing flight. The "B4" train stops at Antony, where there's a connecting "Orlyval" line straight to the airport.

Looks like all this is happening next week, so best to get going fast. January's not the height of tourist season, but places will still be filling up if not full already. Hope they have a wonderful experience in Europe.

Mike,

My daughter & I enjoyed our stay at Hotel Diana in the Latin Quarter. It's near to the Cluny Museum & La Sorbonne University.
The hotel is family owned, clean, comfortable, with elevator, A/C, strong Wi-Fi connection & friendly hotel staff 24/7.

Make sure your son (& his friends) pack a good lock so they can lock their valuables while staying in hostels.

There are lots of places with triple rooms; start with a booking site to at least narrow them down.

No reason to stay near Orly -- just stay near the river or at an inexpensive hotel on the left bank -- the taxi will be 30 Euro to and from the airport from anywhere. If they stay centrally they will be able to walk to the major Parisian tourist sites.

Thank you all so much for the informative, helpful replies. Definitely a good idea to get them involved (had my son read your replies already), so they can get used to doing it the next 4 months. I'm leaning toward a stay that has a triple and free wifi in the Latin quarter near the metro direct to Orly. Good idea also on the lock for the hostel stays down the road. I picked up Andy Steve's book on long weekend trip for students for my son for Christmas and he was very excited!

Mike, Anywhere along the RER B for the return trip to Orly is good. If you've found a hotel they agree on, I suggest you let him make the reservation now (even if it's ultimately your dime) and step back, assuming he's not a minor.

My oldest traveled France on his own when he was nineteen and survived--granted he spoke French and is a dual national, but he grew up in the States and had never traveled without us before. It sounds like you've given your son wings, so I'm sure he'll fly.

As for Uber, it's not allowed at the airports. The taxi system is so good, with a fixed rate into the city, so that's the way to go.

Mike be sure when booking a triple the boys confirm the bedding as many triples are a double bed and a single , pretty sure they want three single beds .

Hotel Diane is good as is Hotel Eugenie and Hotel St Pierre ( be sure it's the one on Rue du Exole du Medicine , there are several hotels with similar name) . These are all conveniently located budget hotels in great area. Also if budget is tight look at Hotel Mariganan .
