Paris Les Halles

Anyone see the new Les Halles yet? Is it worth seeing?

I wish I could post a link to the photo I saw this afternoon on Twitter in the immediate aftermath of a HUGE downpour about 3:00 this afternoon, and water was channeled through a funnel and gushing like a huge waterfall onto some steps that descend down into the beast.

It's not even been open 10 days!!

It's so funny - we were right there last Sept to visit St Eustache...I recall the construction and a bunch of - I guess you would call them shipping cars that I assume were used for tool storage and whatnot. It was just a big mess - as all construction sites are. Didn't know at the time what was underway.

Nicole, It's been a mess for over forty years. We'll see if this incarnation works.

Well, apparently the huge waterfall out of the canopy at Les Halles was engineered right in and was planned as the means of water evacuation. In times when it's working to displace the water, they close off those stairs (which are metal grill instead of concrete, so the rain just passes right through).

If you search twitter for "canopee" and "halles" you'll probably see some of the photos we were talking about! And some of the back-and-forth.

So in other words, it's not a design flaw, but rather an integral part of the design.
