Paris: Is it a safe neighborhood ?

Hi !

we (2 adults and 2 10-14 years old) will be in Paris for one week in july. We have reserved a nice legal rental on AIrbnb not far from Strasbourg-St-Denis metro on rue du Faubourg St-Martin. The ad says that this is in the theater district (???). We wont be out at (I guess) midnight but we still need a safe neighborhood that allows us to visit Paris !

I.ve read elsewhere that this area is not safe, sketchy and really out of the way. Anyone can tell us their experience around this neighborhood ?

It is not clear why you think this is an unsafe area. Northern segments of rue du Faubourg St-Martin are low income areas, but that dos not make the dangerous. This is not an area full of tourists, but as long as you are near blvd St Denis and not near Gare de l´Est, I do not see any problems.

Public transportation in Paris is such that you are never far from anywhere.

Can you provide the citations where you read this is not a safe neighborhood?

It is not a typical tourist neighborhood, but maybe a Paris local can weigh in on it. I have no idea, not an area I have ever spent any time in, much less have I stayed there.

Hi Tocard and Jojo, the adress is 18/20 rue du Faubourg Saint-Martin. Its almost at the Corner of boulevard Saint-Denis.

it's someone on the Rick Steves FB page who told me it's not safe and a dump place. That guy says I been to Paris many many time and live in Europe. He says this is a place of drug dealers, junkies and adults parlors.

Rubbish. This is the 10th arrondissement, which is fine. Lots of restaurants, Julien, Frenchie are not far, and a host of others. Rue Montorgueil, one of the most touristic streets in Paris, is not far at all.

There is nothing wrong with this neighborhood, and drugs are sold in every part of the city.

I live about 1/4 mile away in the 3rd. It is very safe, and there are lots of good restaurants around there.
Many people are loitering during daytime around the Chateau d'Eau metro stop: it can look odd but they are just advertising hair / beauty salons. And there are a few prostitutes in the streets in rue Blondel and the short stretch of rue Saint Denis just south of the boulevard of the same name, but again, not a threat!

Not trying to be mean, but I am not sure why you'd book a place then inquire if the area is good/safe. I've been to Paris many, many times and personally, I'd choose a more central area. There are nicer areas to stay for just a week. No offense to anyone who lives in this area :--}

Bjl: never got second thoughts ?

The Airbnb is very nice, got AC, washer and the price is ok. If I could have get the same in a more central location I would have.

As pointed out this is in the 10th Arrondisment, which is the area I stay, ie, Gare du Nord. True, it is not your typical tourist area, certainly no American tourists, if that makes any difference. From my 2 star hotel to your street is about a 10-12 walk. My experience walking through area is only day time, no problems, never felt unsafe, never accosted or that sort of thing.

We stayed in that area for six months a few years ago. A bit colorful rather than stately, a large variety of businesses, but we never had any hesitations. It was a bit gritty but everywhere is gentrifying quickly now. It was walking distance to many metro lines in addition to Strasbourg-St-Denis, good bus lines, good food shopping, a lot of restaurants. It's a very old neighborhood. The arches that you'll see represent the old city walls. This area has a lot of history.

One thing I do when I have questions about a neighborhood is look at reviews of a hotel in that 'hood. Hotel Mimosa is located right next door to where you are staying. Look at reviews of it on Tripadvisor and see if safety concerns pop up in reviews. I know about Hotel Mimosa because I know someone who just agreed to buy an apartment for over 1 million euros on that street. She made the same sort of decision that you made -- picked a space that offered things she wanted that she could not find in her price point in the Le Marais or Saint Germain. And, what Bets said.

If you have found a place that appeals, and has loads of reviews on the Airbnb website (does it? - I haven't looked) and has what you need then buyers remorse may be just that.

Just be sure to really read those reviews carefully and read between the lines. Airbnb often doesn't publish negative reviews so you do need to look between the lines.

Good luck...

We have visited Paris several times and been told that the unsafe areas of the city are north and east of the city center,

I read your "Ten Things..." link. Your intersection is a ten-minute walk north of the Pompidou center. The area she's referring to is closer to Châtelet, and is only about two blocks long. People aren't congregated, loud, or making problems but discreet and working, as they have in that spot for a few hundred years. It's not near you, but if you are walking home after dark which is 10 pm in summer, you can take a different street.

Not everything she writes is correct: parts of the banks of the Seine at night are filled with picnics at night, flagging a taxi--never had a problem-- generalizations.

As for the person who lives in Europe and says it's not centrally located, it is very centrally located.
