Paris in late November, World Cup Related

Bonjour,

Great Forum guys... I think my family of four has our week in Paris pretty well plained, though sure i will have questions coming-up.
Bigger question, any one know of plans around Paris for the World Cup (yes, i know it is in Qatar) but being a soccer guy I know Europe does there thing regardless of location.

We will be in Paris for week 1 and part of week 2 of the opening round (Nov 17-25, travel days both ends). Games kick-off evening EU time.

Two specific questions

  • Does anything close or shut down?
  • Any suggestions on if we wanted to watch France's opening round game with the locals?

thanks!
Matthew.

Bars and cafes everywhere will be showing the matches, and usually there is a Fan Zone or two set up to watch matches outside together, but I can't imagine the authorities will set up anything like that in Paris given the late November/early December timeframe this year.

But you won't have any problem joining in the fun to watch.

I'm envious of your being in Paris during such an auspicious time.

I am absolutely looking forward to the World Cup in Nov. along with the same result as that in 2018 and 1998, exactly as the title of the novel says, "Twenty Years After"

I think you'll have a marvelous time and the spirit should be great!
My husband, two sons and I scored tickets to the USA v Czech Republic World Cup game in 2006 in Germany. (I never want to hear the name Tomáš Rosický again!)
We traveled during that WC to Belgium and the Netherlands, too. Those three countries had TVs outside for outside dining while watching the games. It was always full. Since the WC this year will be held in November, I'm sure the restaurants/bistros, etc. will have them inside. Those countries were much more demure than fans are from the US, however.
A week later, I was inside Monte Carlo in Monaco and no one was in the iconic room. Then, I heard a huge roar and followed the sound to a sectioned-off room and peeked inside: there were many TVs set up and France had just scored a goal. So, if you want to place some bets in a venerable setting. . .
In 2010, we were in Ireland which hadn't qualified but since we had on our USA jerseys, we were greeted with, "Go USA!" The Irish were very generous. The atmosphere was electric during the games. Again, pubs and restaurants were showing the games.

The same was true of the UEFA Euro 2012 Final when we were in Sweden.
Nothing was closed due to any of the games--I was back in the US for the 2006 final when France lost to Italy, so I can't attest to businesses closing for that game (and the Zidane debacle!).
My only advice is to get to the pub/bistro @ an hour before the games to get the best seats. If you can make reservations, even better.

You're going to have a blast!
