This would be our first time traveling to Paris. Is early November a good time to go? Any cautions or considerations during that time? Looking at staying at Hotel Opera Frochot. Comments, concerns about this hotel or location? Thanks!
We were in Paris in Early to mid-November in 2015. Dress in layers. We are Canadian so not a problem for us. I was fine with a sweater and hoodie.
We lucked out with weather and had only a little bit or rain.
We found that lines were 1/2 of what we expected. Loved it for that. It gets darker earlier but we thought it made Paris magical.
We took the bus everywhere and never took the metro and even that was ok cause the traffic was not bad at all.
We would bus to where we wanted to go then we would taxi back from our last destination cause 3 people splitting a $12 euro cab fare was ok by us at the end of a long day.
We stayed in the 7th so I can't help with location.
Just be aware, we saw lots of pickpockets and had to stare down a female pickpocket on the funicular in Montmartre but she did not get us.
We had the Ring scam pulled on us 2 times in 10 days but since I knew what it was, we thought it was funny.
I'm so envious of you right now. We LOVED Paris and want to go back. Have fun.
We often go to Paris in the fall and one year stayed October and November. October was beautiful, our November it was overcast every day, rainy most days, and poured a couple of times. Usually heavy rain in Paris occurs at night -- not that year. We vowed to not go in November again. But weather is so changeable in Paris that you never know and you may be lucky. It will be cool but probably not cold and definitely have water resistant footgear, raincoat and umbrella. That November we walked into the Catacombs with no line at all one afternoon; I think they have become more popular because of some movie since then, but generally lines are much less of an issue in November than October or May our other two main months to be in Paris.
Yes, it is a good time to go. The weather is so varied, I departed around November 20th one year. The Christmas market on the Champs Ellysses was great. Mulled wine, yum. I had a warm fleece hoodie, rain jacket and thin gloves and a scarf some days and shirtsleeves the next. I recall that November 11th was sunny and warm enough for a tshirt; I spent the morning in the Jardin des Plantes, which I highly recommend. I bought a great wool hat at a market too. Wool socks were worn a few times, once in mid-October when I was at an evening outdoor food market and outdoors for hours. Bring layers of clothing, buy a scarf at a market if needed (I always buy more scarves). I travel with thin gloves in my rain jacket much of the year.
Fall is my favourite time to visit Paris. Hopefully the fresh figs are still available. Check when the Christmas displays at Galleries Lafayette open, always fabulous.
Enjoy!
I'd check a live weather report a few days before you depart, and make changes in your wardrobe as needed.
There is no sense in relying on other people's opinions about the weather when they were on past vacations, and the historical weather references are very often wrong.
I've lived here for 10 years and have never seen "the typical November"...
Paris is my favorite city in the world. So for me, any time is a good time to go. My only recommendation is to be flexible with plans. Head for outdoor sights and activities when the weather's good, especially for views (Montparnasse, Eiffel, Arc de Triomphe. . . ).
chexbres,
I suspect each and every one of them was the typical November.
And that's the point.
Never have seen two Novembers exactly alike since I've been here.
That's why I suggested checking a live weather station before packing.
As for your choice of hotel, be aware that it is 500 meters from the Moulin Rouge, and in the Montmartre district. You may or may not get much sleep, here, as it is an active area.
