Paris Hotels - 6th arrondissement or other districts?

My husband and I will be visiting Paris next spring. I have been looking at hotels in the 6th arrondissement as that area seems to be a good central location. Is this a good idea or should we consider other districts in Paris? My husband is very tall so we can’t stay where we would only have a double bed. We would prefer a hotel that offers a king bed or 2 twins. Some of the hotels we have been looking at are La Villa Saint Germain des Pres, Millésime Hôtel and Hotel Signature St Germain des Pres. When I last checked these hotels ranged from €321 to €390 for refundable rates. Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you!

Do you really want to pay those sky-high prices? If you work at it you should be able to be comfortable and still be able to afford a meal.

Be careful about using names for bed sizes. The names do not have the same meanings as they do in North America, as you probably noticed in Italy.

If you husband needs a wide bed then you need to know the width of the bed in centimetres (cm). If he needs a long bed then you need to know the length in cm. Most beds are 180 cm long (about EDIT: six feet) as a starter for ten.

Having extra width is no guarantee of extra length.

Actually I would prefer to pay less but the hotels I was finding where I could get a king/2 twins were in that price range. I would definitely welcome recommendations at lower price points. I've just started to investigate. I should probably get a few guide books but I thought it would be best to get the opinions of others who have been before. Thank you for the help!

The 6th is certainly a good location for sightseeing, with many fine hotels, but there's no reason not to look at the 5th or 4th, or others. Generally speaking, the closer you are to the river the more you will pay and the more convenient it will be. But really anywhere inside the Peripherique that's near a Metro stop (preferably one where two or more lines intersect) would be OK location-wise.

It's true, terminology about beds is much looser in Europe than in the US. A US queen is 160 cm wide, as a point of reference. We look for twin beds in European hotels because I'm 6'1" and a US double is too tight for us. A 160-cm-wide bed is OK, anything larger we have not yet found.

For the prices you quote you should have a lot of choices. We have stayed comfortably and conveniently for a good deal less, though prices have probably increased.

EDIT -- Just saw your post above. Our experience has been that rooms with two twins are very common. Use booking.com to look for hotels by price range, geography, and other variables. The reviews are by people who actually stayed in the hotels (unlike Trip Advisor). When you've identified some candidates, use the hotels' own websites to make the actual booking unless booking.com offers a much cheaper rate (which would be unusual). We generally go for a cancellable rate because sometimes plans change. The "street view" feature of Google Earth lets you "explore" a hotel's street and neighborhood, which can be helpful.

Some hotels book only six months ahead, or maybe less. But at this point most of them should be taking spring bookings. It would be a good idea to get started now on this process, assuming that your flights are set up.

To build on my earlier answer - once you know the dimensions of the bed you want, many hotels will publish the sizes of the different beds they have in their website, and if not you can communicate with them and ask the question.

Some american chains in Paris have american sized beds.

Don't rule out staying on Ile St. Louis itself. It's about as centrally located as can be, and not our of line with the prices you cited in your original post. There are three on the same street you might want to consider. We stayed at Hotel des Deux-Iles and were very pleased. The same people also own Hotel de Lutece just down the street. Another one is the Hotel St. Louis. Check them out and see what you think.

American chain hotels - such as Best Western - normally have king-sized beds.
They are individually owned.

Thanks so much for all the ideas and suggestions! It’s been very helpful. I'm now looking at the other districts suggested. Will try for 2 twin beds.

Two twin beds measure only 90 cm x 200 cm, which is 35 inches wide by 78 inches long.
I think one of you will be miserable in a twin bed.
I'd go for the chain hotels, which have queen or king beds.

My mother and I will be staying in a twin room (two twin beds) at Les Tournelles in the Marais near the Place des Vosges (it's in the 3rd arrond). The twins are advertised as being 1 meter wide. Hope that helps. The location is close to Notre Dame and we plan to walk everywhere. The price is much cheaper than the 321 euro price mentioned.

I still say to go for a chain hotel, where the beds will be larger than one metre.

Hotel Signature St Germain des Pres is a very nice (small) boutique hotel. It is very well situated but they do not have King beds...they have Queens. Other than that I would highly recommend it...we spent 5 days there this past June.
