Arriving at Orly Monday 4/8. Recommendations for hotel in safe neighborhood that is relatively straightforward to find. New to public transportation so would like some simple help with how to access that as I expect to be quite sleep deprived when I get there.
Paris is safe -- this isn't an issue. A hotel we like is Henry IV Rive Gauche -- just around the corner from Shakespeare and company and just across the river from Notre Dame. Well connected to transport. Nice little boutique hotel and many rooms have a view onto an historic church.
We love staying right in the center of the city. The Hotel des Deux-Iles located be on Ile St. Louis. There are a couple of other hotels on the same street, and one of them is a sister hotel. Cross the river one way and you will be in the Marais -- cross it the other way and you'll be in The Latin Quarter. Walk to the end of the island, cross the bridge, and you'll be at the back of Notre Dame which is still being reconstructed.
The Metro is nearby and getting anywhere is not a problem. There are several restaurants on the island. If you stay there, we can steer you to a great little place for breakfast as hotel breakfasts seem to be over priced for what one gets. We can also tell you about several places for lunch and / or dinner on the island as well.
The best way to get to any hotel in a sleep drprived state is to take a taxi from the official taxi rank at the airport. Do not use a driver who tries to get your business in the terminal -- rip off waiting to happen.
A person arriving at Orly may well be arriving on a flight from another European destination. If so, they won't be fighting jet lag. (Not that a taxi may still not be a good idea, and indeed, a taxi is cheaper from Orly than CDG .)
I expect to be quite sleep deprived when I get there...
For many people, sleep deprivation and jet lag often go hand in hand.
If you're looking for a hotel that is right on top of a metro station, look no further than Hotel Yllen Eiffel. There's only 1 exit and you go up, turn right and voilà. The hotel is very nice, they offer single rooms, and the breakfast is pretty darn good.
I’m a female in my early 60s and currently in Paris solo. I’ve stayed in a lot of areas and never been worried. I’m currently on the Rur Cler and with the exception of the clueless Americans with 4 kids who think that the road is a safe place to play it’s been a very nice visit.
I've stayed at this lovely hotel twice by myself and once with my husband.

There are two metro stations and bus stops very near and the kind staff members assist with directions and instructions on ticket options.
I've taken taxis to / from this hotel and Orly. It's a set fee that I can't recall but very reasonable and convenient.
jules, we are staying at Hotel Signature's sister property Maison/Petite Chomel, a few doors down next week. I was just was on Chomel's website and they happened to have posted that they are doing some painting and electrical work starting this week. (Sprucing up for the Olympics no doubt.) Unfortunately, we were never notified, so I checked Hotel Signature to see if they still had availability. (I booked long ago, and both then, were comparable rates.) Anyway, wow, rates for Hotel Signature are between $800-$1000/night for the next few weeks. Yikes.
To be near the Metro, Place de la Republique's station serves five lines, efficient for commutes to various parts of the city. Although not known for major tourism sites, the Place bustles with lively locals and is handy to the Canal St-Martin for pleasant strolling.
Hotel Emile in Marais. Run by two women hoteliers. Fantastic area, close to St Paul station and walkable to everything.
