We''ve never taken a RS tour-only Insight. I like the smaller group that RS advertises. I can find little or no reviews about the hotels used on this tour. I've heard they are basic-but how basic??? Any input would be helpful to us .

I'm sure the hotels vary with guide and by year, but in general they're pretty nice. I would say they're 3-star places. Of all the things to find problematic about buying a European tour, the quality of a hotel on a Rick Steves tour, at this time, is not what I would worry about.
I say "at this time" because there was a time, early in his career, when I understand Mr. Steves purposely put his tour customers in pretty lousy lodging so they would appreciate better how well they had it at home.
That's not the case now, in my experience.
The tour members scrapbooks are always fun to look at. They might give you some great insight not only on the hotels but the overall tour. https://www.ricksteves.com/tours/scrapbooks
