Paris Guided Walks

I've been to London several times and have always enjoyed the London Walks tours (depending on the guide). Does Paris have anything comparable? Any suggestions for particularly interesting guided walks?

I did a Paris Walk in Montmarte. I liked it very much.

I managed to do 4 during my visit last Fall and 2 in the Spring!

If you have ~any~ interest in WWII consider doing one of the ones covering Paris and the Occupation. I’ve done the Right bank one twice, different guides, slightly different routes. They were both excellent...and truth be told, I’d do that walk again.

I also particularly enjoyed the one concerning Franklin and Jefferson in Paris. I knew both had been assigned to Paris but just had not thought about that in the context of Paris-the politics in Paris at the time (just before and at the start of the French Revolution), who they would have met and where, etc.

Really though, any that fit in your time frame would be good. A friend and I are trying to figure out how we can work a visit so we catch the walk on the Knights Templar. It’s not given as regularly as others.

I went on the “Hemingway's Paris” walk with Chris which was fun and interesting and took us through the Latin Quarter. In late April. Small group of 15 people.

One of our favorite memories of Paris was the Paris Walks/Hemingway tour also. We were able to go back I to the quiet, charming streets of Paris. We were even taken behind one of those gorgeous wooden doors to a courtyard to see the remnants of the Roman wall. We saw a home and cafes related to Hemingway. We also saw places where scenes from Midnight in Paris were filmed. Our tour ended on Rue Mouffetard---a street full of markets. At the bottom of the hill of this street was the most charming circular plaza where we sat outside at a cafe and truly felt as if we were experiencing Paris.

We recently went on a Paris Greeter walk. These are walks done by volunteers who lead you through their own neighborhood--similar to what York Walks has done (for 70 years!). Requests need to be made well in advance--google Paris Greeter; there is no charge for the walk, it can be tailored to your interest. There was an ask for a donation on the website--but not from the walker. Our particular walk was in Montmartre, where our Greeter had lived for over 25 years; I am certain we saw sights that we wouldn't have without the guidance of a long term resident.

I've done 3 Paris Greeter walks, as described above, and will hopefully do a 4th next month. I've done walks in the 4th, the 1st and the 12th. I highly recommend them.

And yet another vote for Paris Greeters. I would heartily recommend the Greeters over an organized tour as you learn so much more probably because it's more or less 1:1. My husband and I did one a couple of years ago in the Marais - it was terrific as was one we did in Bilbao. You can ask as many questions as you want and you really get a sense of how people live in the city you are touring. In both instances our guides were locals and were able to provide so much more information than a 'canned' tour. The Bilbao tour ended up lasting almost 6 hours because we enjoying ourselves so much - stopping in at pintxos bars and cafes along the way. In Paris we got to see the Marais from the perspective of someone who lives there - the shops she frequents as well as the background to some of the recents changes as well as the history and highlights of the Marais. In addition she shared a wealth of tips and ideas for other things to do during our stay in Paris. We are returning to Paris this fall and will be signing up for another tour.
