Paris - Guide for Museums

Hi,
I have a short time in Paris in Sept. I have not been to Paris and would like to spend one day with an experienced guide that could give a highlight tour of the museums in Paris. Any suggestions?

Tours by Locals gets lots recommendations on TripAdvisor. I have not used them, but you can see reviews for individual guides. Most have a suggested tour, but will customize.

What type of museum are you interested in? Individual museums offer their own tours and audio guides. Websites have maps and "highlights" that could allow you to see "the best" of several museums in one day. The museums in central Paris are all easy to access.

If you end up doing it yourself, off the top of my head, I can suggest researching Louvre, Musee d"Orsay, Orangerie, Rodin for art, Musee d l'Armee for military history and Napoleon's Tomb, Cluny - Medieval collections, Musée du quai Branly - entomological collections. A number of smaller "gems" but you might want to save those for a return visit. I'm probably forgetting some obvious ones.

If you find no recommendations for tour guides, my guess if you re-post asking for people's favorite Paris museums, you will be inundated with ideas for do it yourself!!

Yep, you are going to have to narrow down what you mean by "museums in Paris". I wasn't sure how many but this Wiki article says there are more than 130. You probably mean the biggies but even then you'll want to decide what's important to you!

After you narrow down what you want to see - and I'd think 2 of the big ones would be enough for one day - you could consider contacting Paris Walks to see if they will do a private tour for you. Otherwise you can book tours thru the actual museums themselves OR you can get an audio guide OR use the RS audio or walking tour guides in his guide book.

Thanks for all information. The information will help me narrow down what I want to do.

Hello,
So many museums. The big or famous ones have lines and crowds. But for a nice Paris/French experience you could take the metro out to La Muette on the 9 metro and have a nice walk across a park to the Marmottan Museum (Musee Marmottan Monet). A very nice museum of impressionist/post impressionist painting.

This would mean not being frantic to be moving fast.
