Paris--Grand Hotel Leveque

Hi,

I'm looking for a hotel near the Champ de Mars for June. I stayed at the Grand Hotel Leveque (https://www.hotel-leveque.com/hotel) in Rue Cler in 2012, and it was fine, but while looking at their site for this trip, I noticed they do "day rentals." I'm sure you've heard the jokes about hotels that rent rooms by the hour, so this gave me a bit of pause. I've not seen this advertised before in respectable hotels. Is this a thing in France/Europe? Anybody stayed there recently? I checked Trip Advisor and all seems fine, but just looking for a bit of affirmation on this topic!

Thank you!

I agree Tara, it´s a great opportunity for a very reasonable rate of 79€ for 5 hours from 11h00 to 16h00. An extra hour is 30€ but who would need it?

A bottle of Champagne is reasonable at 40€.

Welcome to Paris.

We stayed at this hotel about 20 years ago on the recommendation of a well known travel guide; it was hands down the worst hotel we ever stayed in in Europe. Noisy, incredibly rude staff, uncomfortable and ugly, very ugly room with a water leak in the bathroom. I am sure it has been renovated in the last 20 years and is probably much better now, but it remains our touch stone for jokes about terrible travel experiences: lousy hotel category. And for context, we always travel close to the ground and use 2 and 3 star hotels so I am not comparing it to fancy hotels or shiny business hotel chains. The piece de resistance is that our baby sitter tried to reach us several times and were told we were not staying there. Luckily it was not a crisis. Terrible place. It was the last time we used that travel guide when selecting a hotel.

We stayed at the Leveque several years ago and it was OK, no issues. We are going back to Paris in May and wanted to try another hotel but stay in the Rue Cler neighborhood. We are now staying at Hotel Champs de Mars. It has good ratings , check it out on line.

My parents had stayed there a few years back and recommended it to me as well but I noticed the TripAdvisor ratings were not very good. So I booked at Hotel de la Motte Picquet recommended by Rick a couple weeks ago - it was perfect -right on the corner of Rue Cler and Avenue de la Motte-Picquet.

I stayed at LeVeque in 2015 and will stay again. Clean, nice, on a great pedestrian street.

Tara,

I've stayed at Grand Hotel Leveque a number of times, and would certainly do so again. The rooms are not luxurious but they were clean and well maintained. I'm typically only in the room to sleep and shower, so don't need anything fancy. As I recall, they charge extra for breakfast, which I opted for. It was typical European breakfast fare and I thought it was very good. If you prefer to stay in the 7th, the hotel location is excellent.

I had a look at the current Trip Advisor ratings and they're more heavily weighted towards the "Excellent" and "Good" level. I suppose it's possible that some of the "day-use guests" may be engaging in the activities you alluded to, but I doubt that's very common. In any case, I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

I've never used them, but I believe "day-use rooms" are offered by other hotels, from five star to "pod" hotels. This probably isn't an unusual practice in the hotel business, and provides a way for them to bring in a bit of extra revenue from vacant rooms.

If Leveque has the same woman managing the hotel as on my last stay a few years ago, I'm sure it will be well run and you should have no problems.

I have stayed several times at Hotel de Champs du Mars. It is very convenient on a side street from Rue Cler. Rooms are small but very nicely decorated.
The owners are very friendly and helpful..

It's many years, but we'll never stay at the Leveque again. We also found Rue Cler to be a bit of a "Seattle" Theme Park. (We like Rick and use his guides often, but this is a special, bad, case.) Paris has so many better options.

Paris is a vast place filled with some really really nice hotels. Why stay in a lousy place that's been made famous only by its inclusion in RS Guide Books and its location on rue Cler (little island of Americans). Venture out to find a really nice place and hopefully one that is more centrally located.

Tara “ day rental” doesn’t mean what you’re thinking lol - it’s not for prostitution!!! It’s so all those people who arrive at 7 am in Paris and want early check in , or aren’t leaving till the evening and want to keep their room longer for a shower etc before departure for an evening flight !

It’s just a way to make extra income for the hotle !

We stayed at the GHL in 1993 - as it was a Rick Steves favorite and featured in one of his 'Travels in Europe' Paris shows on public TV. However, it turned out to be the worst hotel we have EVER stayed in in Europe. The room was dirty, with stains on the carpet, the bed spread, and the walls (no black light was necessary to see them), and it was noisy. The latter issue was partly our fault, because we were young an naive and didn't think to ask for a room NOT facing Rue Cler, where the activity started about 4:00 or 5:00 a.m. My wife still cringes when I mention that hotel. I can only hope it is better in 2019.
