I am planning to be in Paris in the first week of October. Coincidentally, the first Sunday of the month is free museum day. I am torn, do I save some money by going to a big ticket museum like the Louvre or the Orsay? Or will it be so horribly crowded that no amount of savings is worth it. Has anyone here gone to one of the bigger museums on free museum day? What was it like?
Only go to the lesser known museums on free day.
Don't bother with the Louvre or the Orsay or the Pompidou on free day. The lines form well before they open from what I experienced and it is too hot with all the bodies. You get what you pay for quality wise.
The most expensive way to go to the big museums is 'free day' --- and in the middle of a pandemic even more so.
Definitely go to a smaller museum on the free day - one you haven't heard of before you started doing your Paris museum research. Those should be manageable.
Check out the immigration museum near Porte Doree metro and the nearby Bercy shops and circus exhibits.
Museum admission is just part of the cost of your trip, you can try to make a few cuts but you basically have to suck it up. And it's worth it, as I recall they are cheaper than the US.
