Paris fab location ideas (hotel)

I"ve been looking at all the guidebooks etc, and just wanted feedback from any of you that my have stayed in Paris . I'm interested in something very central ; stairs OK, room doesn't have to be 4 star (WC down the hall is fine), but would like a safe, relatively quiet place, as I'll be there on my own. I speak a tiny bit of French.

I was thinking of the Marais area near Place de Voges, or near the Luxembourg Gardens. But I'm open if bus routes etc make another spot you love better.

I'd like to go budget (70-160 for a single). But for various reasons, I need to have a cancellation policy that allows cancellation within 4 days or so. Otherwise, I'd go for an apartment rental.

I've got some good ideas, but if you happen to know of one you especially loved.....

I would recommend near Rue Cler...safe, fabulous pedestrian market street, restaurants, easy access to metro. We stayed at Hotel Beaugency and it was fine...not plush but good. Friendly staff. One street over from rue cler so quiet. Elevator, private bath. The area is a "real neighborhood" and we love it.

Is that 70-160 euros or dollars? If euros, it's worth looking into the Hotel Chopin, which is on the northern edge of the centre but very close to Galeries Lafayette and Printemps. It's inside a shopping arcade, so has little street noise.

I've stayed at the Hotel Beaugency twice, and found it fine too. I have seen, but not stayed in the Hotel Chopin, mentioned above, it seems very charming. The Marais and Place des Vosges areas are great though, if you know of hotels there that meet your budget.

We stayed at the Hotel Cluny Sorbonne in the 5th, in a room for 2 people with an en suite bathroom, and paid about 100 euros per night. The location was great - we liked being close to the Boulevard Saint-Michel, with a lot of shops and young people, and we were a 10-minute walk from the Seine and a few Metro/RER stops.

The Jeanne d'Arc has been well reviewed but I haven't stayed there myself. Street noise at night might be an issue in the Marais, depending on what floor you're on and whether your window faces out or in. Place des Vosges and the Luxembourg Gardens are probably the nicest parks in Paris, great neighborhoods. Safety is much less an issue than in any big American city.

We stayed some years ago at the Hotel des Grandes Ecoles in the Latin Quarter, very pleasant, comfortable, and quiet, rooms surround a nice garden, close to lots of eating places, the Mouffetard street market, and a couple of Metro stations. This year's singles start at 130 euros (you'd have to put up with your own bathroom). I'd highly recommend the place.

This hotel is not in Marais.. but its such a good central location.. steps to busy area.. but on a quiet street, walk to Notre Dame, Cluny , etc.. 5 minutes tops.. near many bus and metro lines and stations.

Cheap and clean.. has ac ( rare for cheap) and staff are nice. A two star ..

Hotel St Pierre near the Sorbonne.

I have stayed at the Jeanne d'Arc a couple of times and liked it and the location. Certainly recommend it. The elevator is the smallest known to man, by the way, but at least there is an elevator.

I know this is a little out of the areas you mentioned, but years ago, I have stayed at the Hotel de L'Esperance (5th district "bottom of Rue Mouffetard). My parents just stayed there last September as well and said it was still a nice hotel. It is clean, comfortable, and in a nice location (nice enough that I'm going to stay there again in April, but this time with two younger daughters). It is also very reasonable in price (around 90 euros for a single, doesn't include breakfast - 9 euros more or head to the delicious bakery down the block). For the price and the quality, I really think it is hard to beat! The cancellation policies were good as well. Plus, it's a hop-skip-and-jump to the Metro. Highly recommend it. Have fun!
